About the Working Families Party
The Working Families Party (WFP) is the progressive party for the multiracial working class, fighting for a nation that works for the many, not the few. We recruit, train, and support transformational candidates up and down the ballot — and run them to win.
We believe that no matter where we come from or what our color, most of us want the same things. We want to earn enough to thrive, not just survive, and leave a better future for our kids. We want healthy food and clean water, safe neighborhoods and a safe world. We want to be free.
The Working Families Party is regular people coming together across our differences to make a better future for us all. We’re a multiracial party that fights for workers over bosses and people over the powerful. We want an America which realizes the promise – unrealized in our history – of freedom and equality for all.
Working Families Party (WFP) is seeking a dedicated and experienced Associate General Counsel to join our progressive organization’s compliance team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for progressive politics, practical campaign finance law experience and a commitment to ensuring compliance across all 50 states. This role is crucial to maintaining the effectiveness of our state and national campaign operations and supporting our mission to drive progressive change across the country.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research & Compliance: Conduct ongoing research on federal and state-specific campaign finance laws and regulations to ensure compliance across all 50 states. Make recommendations to the Operations Director and General Counsel regarding engaging outside legal counsel for state-specific compliance and coordinate those relationships.
  • Coordination of Legal Questions: Serve as the primary point of contact for initial legal inquiries related to campaign finance and election law from staff, and work with the Director of Operations to direct complex or specialized questions to the General Counsel as appropriate.
  • Compliance Guidance: Provide clear and accurate advice to WFP staff across the country regarding campaign finance laws and compliance requirements on a range of matters that arise on a daily basis.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Assist in the preparation and review of legal documents, filings, and reports related to campaign finance. Oversee the creation of a centralized repository of frequently asked campaign finance questions for use by the Director of Operations, compliance staff, and campaign staff.
  • Training & Education: Develop and deliver training materials and sessions to educate staff on relevant legal and compliance issues multiple times per year. Support the evaluation of staff’s understanding of their compliance responsibilities.
  • Policy Development: Assist the Director of Operations and General Counsel in the development and implementation of internal policies and procedures to ensure ongoing compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Risk Management: Identify and assess potential legal risks related to campaign activities and develop strategies to mitigate those risks.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Education: Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Bar Admission: Admission to state, territory, or District of Columbia bar and in good standing. Eligible to register as In-House Counsel in New York State.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of post-graduate legal experience, with a focus on federal, state, and/or local campaign finance law, political law, or related areas.
  • Skills:
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment: A strong commitment to progressive values and the mission of the Working Families Party.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with political campaigns, non-profits, or advocacy organizations.
  • Familiarity with state-specific campaign finance laws and regulations.
