The Digital Media Manager is a crucial member of the Active Minds communications and marketing team, owning pivotal platforms for communicating with an active audience of almost half a million followers. Based in Washington, D.C. and reporting to the Senior Manager, PR, the Digital Media Manager will be a vital contributor to growing and fostering a positive online presence for the organization.


Active Minds is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization mobilizing youth and young adults to change the culture around mental health. Through our presence in more than 1,000 high schools, colleges, and communities, and with a wide-reaching public audience, Active Minds is creating communities of support and saving lives. Founded in 2003 by Alison Malmon after the tragic suicide of her brother, Brian, Active Minds is dedicated to supporting a new generation in ending the silence, helping to make mental health as highly valued as physical health. Through our many programs, we are changing social norms and behaviors related to mental health across the country.


  • Lead, manage, and grow Active Minds’ presence on social media and other digital channels, including research and evaluation of new platforms and roll-out models for the Active Minds national brand.
  • Plan and develop social media content calendars and the related content for all platforms, taking into account organizational goals as well as strategic partnership metrics.
  • Manage the Senior Social Media Content Producer with the key goal of being the front-line face and voice of Active Minds’ social media accounts, producing regular social media content, responding to direct messages, and interacting with our audience regularly.
  • Work with Active Minds leadership, the Senior Manager, PR, and the Senior Manager, Communications to distribute social media content to position Active Minds as a thought leader in young adult mental health and to engage their unique audiences.
  • Establish strategic partnership and relationships on social media with brands to reach new and existing audiences
  • Oversee and/or directly support development of shareable and engaging content to increase awareness of Active Minds signature programs, such as our National Conference, Active Minds Speakers, Send Silence PackingⓇ, Active Minds @Work, Cause and Career, A.S.K., and the Healthy Campus Award.
  • Build and support partnerships with organizations, ambassadors, speakers, and influencers to expand reach of platforms and programs.
  • Grow and manage robust paid social media campaigns.
  • Participate in and organize industry-focused and partnership-building activities on social media, such as Twitter Chats, Instagram Lives, Facebook Lives, and more.
  • Develop unique digital content for strategic partnership campaigns and develop accompanying tool kits and shareable digital content to share with stakeholders internally and externally in partnership with the PR, Design, and communications colleagues on the MarComm team.
  • Measure and monitor social engagement and platform growth providing a monthly comprehensive report communicating metrics as well as narrative recaps of digital performance.
  • Work with the Development team to support or identify opportunities to fundraise on social media.
  • Meet regularly with leads on the Programs team to ensure their digital needs are being met and to collaboratively develop, support, and/or inform campaigns, projects, and events.
  • Demonstrate strategic innovation introducing Active Minds to new platforms and creatively use these outlets to maximize awareness and engagement for the organization.
  • Actively lead and participate in content creation, editing, and integration into campaigns, projects, and events throughout the organization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



  • 4-5 years related experience in digital/social media marketing for a nonprofit or similar environment, or a high level of transferable experience.
  • Passion for creating online communities and creating positive dialogue to change the conversation around mental health for young adults nationwide.
  • Prior experience managing professional social media profiles.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to construct messaging to resonate with audiences ranging from young adults to professionals.
  • Able to prioritize tasks, organize time effectively, and respond to changing deadlines; must have ability to manage multiple tasks at a given time.
  • Ability to engage with audiences off-hours and on weekends, as required.
  • Fully digital literate, including Microsoft and Google products, and online meeting tools.
  • Experience with social media monitoring tools and platforms, and with Google Analytics.

This position offers a salary range of $65,000-$74,000 along with robust benefits. The starting pay for this position is equal to others at the same level throughout the organization. Candidates whose experience meets both the minimum and preferred qualifications may be considered for a starting salary that exceeds the current amount. The role sits within Active Minds Level 3 salary band, and as such, has the potential to grow to $92K over time. FLSA Status: Exempt.
