Climate Nexus is a nonprofit strategic communications group dedicated to changing the conversation on climate change and clean energy solutions in the United States. Climate Nexus is seeking a Communications Associate for its Campaigns & Strategies division.

Our team leads long-term narrative campaigns to change public perception and accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels. We specialize in traditional media outreach, digital campaigning and messaging, government affairs and politics, research and polling, and opposition strategy.

Climate Nexus was created to be the behind-the-scenes connector to ensure coherent, effective climate communications and to elevate the work of a broad network of partners, including youth groups, environmental justice allies, cities and state leaders, and more. Climate Nexus provides pro-bono support to organizations that work on climate change and clean energy and believes the “story” of climate change is the foundation on which meaningful action is built. Our job is to tell that story to as many people as possible.

Climate Nexus is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace and considers qualified applicants for employment without regard to age, sex, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity, military/veteran status, or any other basis prohibited by applicable law.

There has never been a more important time to be working on climate change; both the public will and the urgent need for action are high. But opposition forces with seemingly endless resources are stalling critical policy action on climate. We need the help of talented, committed, and justice-oriented individuals to reverse this trend and seize the opportunity for climate action.

This position is on the Building Electrification team, which provides communications support to community, local, state and national efforts to remove fossil fuels from our built environment, and advocates for a just, equitable and safe transition to all-electric buildings as part of the economy-wide transition away from fossil fuels.

You do not need to have expertise in building electrification, energy or housing policy to be a strong candidate for this role.

The Building Electrification team is a team of two, situated within a larger, highly collaborative division. The Communications Associate will report to the Director of Building Electrification, who is based in New York State and will collaborate frequently with members of other teams and divisions within Climate Nexus, as well as external partners around the country. While the Communications Associate will contribute to both traditional media (ie: working with journalists and editors) and digital media work, the emphasis and the majority of time will be spent on traditional media.

Here is an example of a day in the life of a Building Electrification Communications Associate:

  • Start the day with media monitoring, and flagging important clips for the team via Slack
  • Cross-team Zoom coordination calls
  • Independent work such as: pitching reporters, writing fact sheets or backgrounders, writing op-eds, updating our media database, developing basic creative or social media content like a flier for partner using Canva, reading new research or reports developed by partners
  • Participating in various coalition strategy calls or check-ins with partners
  • Hosting press briefings or webinars

  • Daily media monitoring, building and maintaining journalist outreach lists
  • Develop and maintain relationships with journalists and editors who cover a variety of beats related to climate change, clean energy, business, politics and more
  • Implement campaign and communications strategies to support clean energy and climate change solutions
  • Work with community, local, state, trade press and national reporters to advance stories and elevate voices that support climate solutions
  • Draft talking points, press releases, op-eds, memos, issue briefs, and a range of written products
  • Assist Climate Nexus’ digital team to execute basic digital media projects, including creative design work, social media and web content development, and basic digital campaign infrastructure
  • Collaborate with external partners to execute strategic communication projects and strategies that support their goals and priorities and advance building electrification solutions

  • Demonstrated interest in racial justice
  • Enthusiasm to learn the ropes of earned and digital communications, including writing for PR, earned media strategy, basic creative content design and digital strategy
  • Strategic and analytical thinker who can recognize communications opportunities and risks
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Exceptional ability to multitask, prioritize, and proactively manage simultaneous issues
  • Excellent writing, editing, research, advocacy, and verbal communication skills. Enjoys writing and receiving constructive feedback
  • Competency working cross-culturally, and demonstrated commitment to advancing racial justice and equity, including ensuring equity is central to team strategy and daily communications work

  • This position will require you to work at a computer for multiple hours at a time – Climate Nexus will provide the computer
  • While we value work/life balance, due to the nature of news, this role will sometimes require work outside traditional hours

LOCATION: Our staff is fully remote. Occasional travel will be required for team, partner, or movement events.

SALARY RANGE: $55,000 – $65,000, commensurate with experience. Climate Nexus offers a generous benefits package, including paid vacation, personal and sick leave; standard health, dental, and vision packages; generous employer contributions to 401k retirement accounts; parental leave; public transit benefits.

  • Please fill out the form below. We will begin reviewing applications the week of April 24 and accept applications until the position is filled.
  • Due to the number of expected applicants, we will only reach out to candidates we plan to interview.
