About Us

Climate Nexus is a nonprofit strategic communications group dedicated to changing the conversation on climate change and clean energy solutions in the United States. It was created to be the behind-the-scenes connector to ensure coherent, effective climate communications and to elevate the work of a broad network of partners, including youth groups, environmental justice allies, cities and state leaders, and more. 

Climate Nexus provides pro bono support to organizations that work on climate change and clean energy and believes the “story” of climate change is the foundation on which meaningful action is built. Our job is to tell that story to as many people as possible.

Job Summary

Reporting directly to the Managing Director of Campaigns and Strategies, leading the LNG, Methane Science, and Methane Accountability teams, the Senior Director of Strategic Communications will lead campaigns that intersect the urgency of climate change, climate action, and climate justice. You will:

  • Guide the organization’s and partner’s strategic public messaging and strategic communications efforts for our LNG, methane, and methane accountability campaigns.
  • Inspire a team that operates like an idea fountain, constantly tossing out campaign ideas. Some will be decent, some will be downright horrible, and some will change the game.
  • Iterate. Constantly revise your plans in response to real-world developments. Flexibility is your middle name.
  • Evaluate. Is it working? Rigorously analyze data, report on the impact of climate justice campaigns, and learn, learn, learn.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate is entrepreneurial and self-directed, bringing creativity, outstanding project management, and strategic communications capabilities to prioritize an ambitious agenda for maximum impact. This role requires a deep commitment to the principles of environmental justice and the ability to tell compelling stories of community-based advocacy. The optimal candidate has worked in advocacy environments and understands the climate justice movement, possessing a solid grasp of the economic, social, and political forces that shape environmental policy in the U.S.

While no one candidate will possess all the qualifications listed below, the ideal candidate will embody many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes, and experiences.

  • At least 10-12 years of increasing responsibility in advocacy campaign communications and/or public relations with a proven track record of accomplishments designing and executing communications strategies that generate visibility, credibility, and thought leadership.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and experience with anti-racist frameworks, terminology, and messaging.
  • An influential, purpose-driven, and adaptable advocate and change leader with expertise in advocacy campaign communications strategy, development, and operationalizing a transformative vision to drive systems change through a justice and equity lens in an evolving landscape. 
  • Social media savvy with an understanding of how to integrate social media into comprehensive communications and movement-building strategies.
  • Ability to navigate complex issues and interests, turning ideas into action while establishing sustainable systems and trusted relationships.  
  • A trusted people leader who builds dynamic high-performing cross-functional teams by fostering a culture of respect, inclusivity, and collaboration.
  • Strong commitment to the mission and goals of Climate Nexus and a strong passion for solving the climate crisis through environmental justice.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing successful advocacy strategies, including policy analysis, grassroots organizing, and coalition building.
  •  Demonstrated understanding of how organized movements create change and accomplish policy objectives.
  •  Strong project management abilities to ensure effective collaboration and projects that advance on time and on budget.
  •  Strong relationship-building skills with a wide range of diverse external constituencies diplomatic abilities and authentic leadership skills that build trust-based relationships necessary for stakeholders to buy in and share accountability for our collective work.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and be flexible in a fast-paced, constantly evolving, and collaborative environment, where working on a team and working individually are required.

  • Experience working on methane and LNG issues.

Core Responsibilities

Strategic Communications 

  • Collaborate in the development of integrated communications strategies in support of Climate Nexus’ partners oversee implementation, and measure results. 
  • Develop message frameworks based on a racial justice analysis/framework of methane and LNG issues that centers and amplifies Black, Indigenous, and people of color’s joy, solutions, and demands.  
  • Provide strategic communications counsel and technical assistance support of partner’s priorities. .
  • Leverage internal and external communication platforms to relay complicated content using storytelling, illustrations, and other consumable formats.
  • Produce or collaborate on producing a variety of individual communications products for internal and external audiences, including writing, editing, and/or publishing communications.

Team Management

  • Develop and supervise a talented, experienced, and gifted team of campaigners and communications strategists including establishing annual goals (to support overall campaign goals established and funder deliverables), provide regular feedback, conduct performance reviews, and support ongoing professional development.
  • Develop dashboards to track progress and benchmarks against established work plans and proactively produce reports and analyses of campaigns to inform strategies and improve results.
  • Routinely report to advisors, partners, and funders on activities, campaigns, and events, providing quantitative and qualitative analyses to illustrate impact and engagement.

Relationship Management

  • Cultivate and sustain relationships with frontline community members, community partners and institutions, and key stakeholders. 
  • Build new relationships that advance equity, justice, climate action, and environmental policies for Just Transition.

Location: Remote

While we value work/life balance, due to the nature of news this role will sometimes require work outside traditional hours. 

Salary range: $160,000-$180,000, commensurate with experience.
