Position Description
Advanced Energy United (United) seeks a smart, innovative, and politically savvy Principal to join our policy and campaign team on transmission. The Principal will work collaboratively with existing project teams in the west to accelerate the buildout of needed transmission to achieve 100% clean energy.
There is no silver bullet to reaching 100% clean energy as a country. It will require maximizing the use of demand side resources, as well as the buildout of utility scale clean energy resources and the needed transmission infrastructure to connect the nation’s clean energy resources with its energy demand. This campaign will build support for transmission at all levels of government that is responsive to local objectives and existing state policies. It will include a recognition of the critical role of distributed energy resources in achieving full decarbonization and ensuring that needed transmission buildout will be cost-effective and politically sustainable.
Focus states for this position will include: California, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada
United is seeking a highly energetic, creative, and solutions-oriented professional with a background in issue advocacy and campaigns at the state or regional level. Experience working on campaigns to advance clean energy solutions is a plus. The Principal will work collaboratively as part of project teams under the direction of the Transmission Campaign Director and relevant Managing Directors. The Principal will work collaboratively with key stakeholders to build support for and advance United’s transmission agenda in priority states. Candidates should be creative and flexible, with the ability to work in multiple venues with diverse stakeholders.
The successful candidate will have the ability to find common ground both with a diverse corporate membership and external stakeholders. Candidates will need to have the ability to travel to meet with United members, coalition allies and stakeholders, and public officials.
Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with United team members on developing and implementing strategies to accelerate the development of transmission in the region. This work will result in political and policy victories at the state level and within wholesale markets.
- Work with United members to develop political positions and reach consensus on policy positions in key states on transmission-related issues. Facilitate coalition calls and community-based outreach around transmission priorities and projects.
- Organize member engagement opportunities through direct decision maker engagement such as lobby days and candidate education, earned media, and expert testimony.
- Draft campaign collateral needed for education and advocacy efforts and deliver verbal presentations as necessary.
- Serve as United’s point of contact in existing coalitions working to advance transmission projects in targeted states, as well as build new coalitions to advance our policy priorities in the region.
- Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with coalition partners, allies, and key legislative, regulatory and administrative staff.
- Identify opportunities for United to seek earned media coverage, including earned media, op-eds, editorial board meetings, etc., in key media outlets. Draft press statements, write blog posts, participate in webinars, and create opportunities to showcase the benefits of transmission to achieving 100% clean energy.
- Travel on an as needed basis (up to 30%) to targeted states for advocacy days, meetings with key allies and stakeholders, communications outreach, and other efforts on behalf of United.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- 4-6 years of professional experience in campaign or issue organizing; experience advocating for clean energy is a plus.
- Entrepreneurial approach, flexible attitude, and ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, both written and verbal
- Intellectual curiosity, inquisitive nature, and excellent listening and problem-solving skills
- Experience working with business leaders is a plus.
- Must be willing to travel
Job type: Full-time; regular; residence in the U.S. required
Location: Remote (preference for candidates residing in one of the focus states in the west)
Salary: starting at $70,000 annually
Start Date: January 2024
