Advanced Energy United (United) is currently seeking a Policy Principal with strong analytical abilities and excellent writing and communications skills with interest and experience in policy advocacy to join our wholesale electricity markets team. The Policy Principal will help expand our engagement in the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) and Southwest Power Pool (SPP) markets. The Policy Principal will work with other United team members to execute multi-year strategies and campaigns designed to transform wholesale electricity markets to support the U.S. transition to 100% clean energy. This also includes attending relevant stakeholder meetings to track market developments and processes as well as build relationships with MISO and SPP staff, market participants, and other stakeholders. This work will focus on changing the rules governing how existing competitive wholesale electricity markets operate to support the growth of clean energy resources and the retirement of aging incumbent technologies, and on expanding competitive wholesale electricity markets to areas where they do not currently exist.
The Policy Principal will monitor and help to lead the engagement and analysis of market rule reforms under consideration in the stakeholder process of competitive wholesale electricity markets and on rulemakings and filings at FERC to assess their impact on the growth of advanced energy technologies. The Policy Principal will prepare advocacy materials (comments, presentations, letters, fact sheets, etc.) to support adoption of key wholesale power market design and rules changes needed to expand advanced energy technologies, and to ensure rejection of market design and rule changes that would discriminate against advanced energy technologies. The Policy Principal will also engage in related work with priority state regulators and policymakers who are key influencers in wholesale markets, and in political and policy campaigns to expand transmission infrastructure to support clean energy deployment. The Policy Principal may also manage the development of competitive wholesale markets intelligence provided to subscribers to United’s software platform Insight Engine (formerly PowerSuite).
The ideal candidate will be a motivated self-starter with interest and experience in policy and politics, wholesale energy markets, clean energy, and climate. The candidate will have a balanced skill set that includes comfort with quantitative and qualitative analysis of complex economic and technical materials, strong writing and communications skills, and an ability to work directly with members and policymakers. We seek a mix of market experience and knowledge of wholesale market issues as well as coalition-building skills. Candidates should be creative and flexible, able to explain complex topics clearly, and have the ability to prioritize and move between projects as needed to support United’s work in a wide variety of areas. Candidates will need to have the ability to travel to meet with United members, coalition allies, and public officials, and to participate in wholesale electricity market stakeholder meetings.
· Work collaboratively with United team members to develop and execute strategies and campaigns to accelerate achievement of 100% clean energy in competitive wholesale electricity markets, and to expand competitive wholesale markets in the MISO and SPP regions.
· Draft comments and create reports, presentations, fact sheets, and other written and visual materials needed for education and advocacy efforts and deliver verbal presentations as necessary.
· Manage the tracking and analysis of wholesale markets policy developments around the country, providing intelligence and insights using United’s Insight Engine platform; may also require delivering weekly newsletter summarizing key events for subscribers.
· Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with United staff, members, partners, regulators and policymakers, and key wholesale electricity markets staff and market participants.
· Work with United’s communications team to identify opportunities for United to seek earned media coverage, including earned media, op-eds, editorial board meetings, etc., in key media outlets.
· Engage in coordination and advocacy efforts with coalition allies, attend and participate in MISO and SPP stakeholder meetings, engage members, build coalitions, and advance priorities in support of clean energy goals in wholesale electricity markets.
· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; Master’s Degree is a plus.
· 4-6 years of professional experience, with at least two of those years of experience in policy analysis, policy advocacy, and/or market analysis; some experience with FERC or competitive wholesale electricity markets and stakeholder processes strongly preferred.
· Experience in the advanced energy industry or clean energy advocacy community is a plus.
· Independent self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit; candidates must be very comfortable working with colleagues in a remote environment, creating new projects, building their own calendar, and delivering on high expectations.
· Must be comfortable working with and learning about complex economic and technical subjects and have the ability to distill them into easy-to-digest takeaways.
· Strong interpersonal skills required; candidates must be able to successfully develop and maintain productive relationships with members, industry stakeholders, policymakers, and other key contacts.
· Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, required—inclusive of public speaking.
· Intellectual curiosity, inquisitive nature, quantitative and analytical skills, and excellent listening and problem-solving skills.
· Experience in advancing a policy agenda and/or working with business leaders is a plus.
· Willingness to travel as needed (up to 30%).
