AFSCME Council 18 has an immediate opening for a Staff Representative – Internal Organizer in Colorado, primarily based in the Denver-area. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a multitude of duties to organize and build capacity for AFSCME Council 18 members and their local unions, as well as organize new workers into AFSCME. The overall responsibility is to build local union capacity and to help to empower the membership.

DUTIES:

The following provides a general summary of duties:

Develops and negotiates collective bargaining agreements and memorandums of understanding. Provides assistance to locals to ensure consistent interpretation and enforcement of provision of collective bargaining agreements. Conducts, advises and assists in grievance preparation, prohibited practices complaints, appeals, and arbitrations, including preparing briefs and witnesses, documentation and evidence. Attend assigned

local union meetings on a regular basis. Assist with the council’s external and internal organizing and political programs, and conduct member trainings. Communicate policy and positions of the council as well as provide advice and guidance to the membership and leadership. Work under supervision of executive director, but candidate must be able to work independently to make necessary decisions concerning all aspects of union representation. Knowledge of applicable labor laws, standards, decisions. Ability to communicate effectively, written and spoken. Proficiency in the use of all relevant computer software.

Ability to work under and meet tight deadlines, manage several assignments simultaneously, paying close attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to travel and work extended hours.

REQUIREMENTS:

A four-year degree and one year minimum experience in labor relations, economics, public administration or a related field. Experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for education. Must maintain a valid State of Colorado driver’s license and insurance.
