Posted on Thursday, May 11, 2023

Agile Six is a people-first, remote-work company that serves shoulder-to-shoulder with federal agencies to find innovative, human-centered solutions. We build better by putting people first. We are animated by our core values of Purpose, Wholeness, Trust, Self-Management and Inclusion. We deliver our solutions in autonomous teams of self-managed professionals (no managers here!) who genuinely care about each other and the work. We know that’s our company’s purpose – and that we can only achieve it by supporting a culture where talented people feel valued, self-managed, and love to come to work.

The role

Agile Six is looking for a Full Stack Software Engineer (versed in Javascript, Node.js, and React) who is able to provide technical leadership on a highly collaborative Agile team working with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The team’s mission is to provide a modernized, accessible, single source of truth for Veterans to access information about VA facilities and services available at those locations. The stack includes: React, NodeJS, Metalsmith static-site generator, Liquid templating, Ruby on Rails, Drupal and GraphQL. The roadmap includes eventual migration to NextJS, and potentially the inclusion of JSON:API alongside GraphQL. Not all elements of the stack are experience requirements.

You will be: providing technical thought leadership & mentorship; troubleshooting and enhancing several existing products; and implementing design system to build front end templates for new products. If you're someone who takes joy in tackling a wide range of challenges or flexing outside of your comfort zone, this is a good place for you. The successful candidate will be contributing to the following GitHub repositories, and potentially others within the VA ecosystem:

Responsibilities

  • Work with a cross-functional Agile team to iterate on existing products and create new products related to VA facilities
  • Provide guidance and informal leadership / mentoring to other teammates through peer code reviews, encouraging frugal/mindful incremental improvements, tech debt reduction, industry best practices, and test-driven thinking
  • Develop NodeJS & React-based front end for VA.gov’s CMS, collaborating with Drupal engineers
  • Understand the technical "big picture" to provide guidance and direction to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Champion product quality and the Veteran user experience, including accessibility, automated unit tests, integration tests, and functional testing
  • Demonstrate strong communication and team collaboration skills
  • Work with a Product Owner to decompose and estimate work, and give input into user stories and product roadmaps
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, including daily standup meetings, backlog refinement, sprint planning, sprint reviews, and retrospectives

We're looking for a person who ...

  • Has a track record of creative troubleshooting and solving complex problems, and can do so in the context of government systems and infrastructure
  • Is adaptive, empathetic, collaborative and holds a growth mindset
  • Has hands-on experience building production web applications using JavaScript, modern JavaScript frameworks, the application of a component-based design system, as well as basic HTML/CSS
  • Can explain technical concepts to non-technical people in a clear and understandable way
  • Embraces an open ethos and is comfortable working and communicating “in the open,” including contributing to open source repositories, opening new issues, participating in open/public discussions, and seeking help when you’re stumped
  • Has experience using automated tests to validate software and build behavior, as well as writing testable code
  • Builds and forms strong relationships with the internal team and external partners

Basic qualifications

  • Strong grasp of computer science fundamentals
  • At least 5+ years of experience as a software engineer
  • At least 3 years of production experience with JavaScript, React, and NodeJS
  • Experience working with git for version control; comfortable with command line
  • Understanding of common design patterns, software development principles, front-end engineering patterns, and how to apply them
  • Experience working in different areas of the software stack and solving a variety of engineering problems
  • Experience working on an Agile team and demonstrating an Agile mindset
  • Ability to work independently on high complexity tasks, and to collaborate as it makes sense for the problem and the work
  • Experience in an open-source, collaborative development environment
  • Has lived and worked in the United States for 3 out of the last 5 years

Additional desired qualifications

  • Ruby and/or Ruby on Rails experience
  • Hands-on experience with Drupal content management systems (preferably with Drupal 8 or above)
  • Familiarity with the US Web Design System
  • Experience working in or with government agencies, especially the VA
  • You are a U.S. Veteran
