Who You Are

The Director of Policy for the Shared Safety division will lead the division’s efforts to develop effective administrative, policy, and budget reform proposals, develop lobbying strategies for each Scaling Safety city in coordination with the division’s Advocacy Director, and serve as Strategic Advisor to the City of Newark. Reporting to the Chief of Shared Safety, this is a new position that will support the Shared Safety program’s goals of decreasing violence by up to 50% and improving public safety for 2.5M people across five core cities by investing in resident-powered organizations. This groundwork will lay the foundation for expansion into more cities nationwide. The successful candidate has extensive experience developing policy, administrative and budget proposals; lobbying and working with lobbyists to advance policy goals; and translating complex policy and administrative procedures in a manner that is accessible to staff, partners, and community-based safety organizations.

What You Will Do

  • Discover, analyze, and document all local, state, and federal public funding streams related to community-based public safety investments in each Scaling Safety city such that the Scaling Safety team and scaled organizations have a clear and thorough understanding of current public investments
  • Develop, evaluate and draft potential policy, administrative, and budget reform proposals to unlock public dollars, i.e. allowing for greater access to those public dollars and/or expand the total amount of public dollars available, for community-based safety organizations in each Scaling Safety city
  • In coordination with the Director of Advocacy, develop robust advocacy strategies to advance these proposals to unlock public dollars
  • Develop and manage lobbying and government liaisoning strategies to advance advocacy strategies and unlock public dollars goals
  • Educate and train scaled organizations about funding streams, potential reforms, and other mechanisms, and support their inclusion and empowerment in advocacy strategies
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Advocacy to assess and execute communications strategies that advance the advocacy goals of each city
  • Maintain thorough documentation throughout the Scaling Safety process of unlocking public funding and ensure continual improvement as Scaling Safety grows year by year
  • Act as the strategic advisor for Newark, which includes deep awareness of developments in the city, liaising with local organizations and officials, and tracking city progress. In coordination with Scaling Safety leadership, continually evaluate city developments and adjust strategies to ensure effective project delivery

Requirements

Required Experience & Competencies

  • Extensive experience developing policy, administrative and budget proposals; lobbying and working with lobbyists to advance policy goals; and translating complex policy and administrative procedures in a manner that is accessible to staff, partners, and community -based safety organizations
  • Deep expertise in the barriers CVI/crisis assistance and victims services in low-income urban communities face to sustaining and growing their work and maximizing their impact
  • Robust relationship and trust-building skills such that CBOs eagerly collaborate with Scaling Safety and collaborate with one another to drive toward mutual safety goals
  • Extensive experience in grassroots and insider-outsider advocacy strategies that empower local leaders, advance policy goals, and improve the stakeholder status of organizations seeking to integrate as permanent part of cities’ safety ecosystem
  • Strong professional and persuasive skills in writing and preparing presentations
