THE CITY is seeking a fast-paced, dynamic Associate News Editor to anchor our newsletters, contribute to our daily news coverage and staff other news products.

THE CITY is New York City’s award-winning nonprofit, nonpartisan local news organization. Working across all five boroughs, our stellar journalists bring diverse skills and backgrounds to the task of covering New York’s neighborhoods, holding the powerful to account and making sense of the greatest city in the world.

THE CITY’s investigative reporting has resulted in criminal indictments, political resignations and ethics inquiries. It has inspired new laws, influenced budget choices and reversed injustices. THE CITY’s explanatory journalism has helped hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers to vote, keep their apartments warm, stay safe in dangerous weather and access public assistance.

The Position

THE CITY’s News Editor will make sure that we cover the biggest stories in the five boroughs accurately, clearly and promptly — with sharp headlines, gripping leads and consistent voice. The News Editor will write and produce our flagship daily newsletter with minimum supervision. They will also write and edit quick-turn news stories on tight deadline.

Responsibilities

  • Anchor THE SCOOP, THE CITY’s flagship daily newsletter, building its audience, news value and utility.
  • Helm breaking news events, from planned coverage to unexpected developments.
  • Edit and produce news articles from across the newsroom.
  • Select and produce news articles from our partner outlets.
  • Collaborate with the engagement editor and newsroom to build our audiences in video, audio and other platforms.
  • Play a key role in growing our total audience, including distribution, alerts and search engine optimization.
  • Work closely with visuals, social, data and product staff to optimize our news offerings.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of newsroom experience, with at least 2 years in an editing role.
  • Strong news judgment and deep familiarity with New York City communities, government and public systems.
  • Excellent line-editing and organizational skills with a sharp eye for detail.
  • Be a news junkie who can anticipate coverage needs.
  • Experience in synthesizing news, aggregation and curation is a must.
  • Ability to collaborate with other editors and reporters.
  • Produce immaculate copy with minimum supervision

Compensation and Benefits

  • $85,000 - $105,000, depending on experience
