About Bloom Works

Bloom Works is a civic technology company that believes better government services start with putting people first. We partner with federal, state, and local agencies to build digital services that advance access and equity and work seamlessly for the people who rely on them. Our teams combine product management, UX design, research, and software engineering expertise to make public systems more human centered, effective, and trustworthy.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Financial Planning & Operations Specialist who will bring clarity, structure, and insight to the way Bloom runs. You’ll serve as Bloom’s primary internal finance resource, turning data into decisions, improving the systems that keep the organization running, and ensuring our resources align with our mission.

This is a hands-on role for someone who’s energized by both details and design: you might close the books one day, then prototype a new dashboard or workflow the next. You’ll report into the Director of Operations and partner with People Ops, and project leadership to make Bloom’s financial and operational foundation as thoughtful as the work we deliver to clients.

What You’ll Do

  • Guide financial insight and planning — Lead budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis; translate numbers into simple narratives that inform strategy. Prepare and present monthly and quarterly financial performance reports.

  • Keep our systems running smoothly — Maintain and improve financial and operational tools (Xero, Harvest, Airtable, Google Workspace, Asana); spot opportunities to automate or simplify.

  • Connect financials to delivery — Partner with engagement managers and practice area directors to monitor budgets, burn rates, compensation, and staffing models—identifying risks early and offering course corrections.

  • Ensure accountability and compliance — Manage payroll, accounting, contract, and expense tracking; maintain robust internal controls, coordinate with external accounting partners, and support audit readiness and compliance standards.

  • Strengthen operations and processes — Streamline recurring workflows like payroll, invoicing, and contracting; document and evolve systems as Bloom scales.

What You’ll Bring

  • 4-7 years of progressive experience in financial planning & analysis (FP&A), operations, or business management, ideally in a high-growth services or consulting environment.

  • Strong financial acumen paired with curiosity for how systems work and how to improve them.

  • Comfort moving between strategy and execution. You’re equally at ease designing a model or troubleshooting a process.

  • Strong proficiency in Google Sheets (financial modeling, look ups etc.) and comfort with manipulating financial/project tracking tools.

  • Excellent communication skills; able to make financial information clear and actionable for non-finance audiences.

  • A collaborative, curious, adaptable mindset and enthusiasm for Bloom’s public-interest mission.

Bonus: Experience with government contracting, or credentials like CPA or CMA. Experience with relational databases (Airtable) and demonstrated experience with PEO and EOR platforms (Rippling).

Eligibility

  • You must be eligible to work in the U.S.
  • This position must live and work within the U.S.
  • Unfortunately, we are unable to sponsor work visas at this time

Compensation

Salary: $80,000 - $108,000 year USD depending on competency level.

Benefits for full-time salaried employees

  • An environment that empowers you to apply your skills and experience for the public good
  • Remote-friendly work environment
  • Medical
  • Dental & vision
  • FSA
  • PTO, holidays, sick leave as well as a week off in the summer and closure at the end of December
  • Tech equipment stipend
  • Professional Development stipend
  • Short-term and long-term disability
  • Equitable 401k contributions
