Build a stronger democracy while preparing for a career in data science, data governance, and policy research. The Data for Democracy Fellowship is a paid, remote professional development experience to launch your data for good career. Within the Fellowship, there are two focuses: the Data Science & Policy Fellow, and the Data Governance Fellow. See below for more info on each.

Through the Center for New Data’s inaugural Data for Democracy Fellowship, we are establishing a unique opportunity for graduate-level students from communities historically underrepresented in tech to launch a career path in data science, data governance, and/or policy research.

The precarious state of American democracy spurred the creation of New Data’s flagship Observing Democracy program in 2020. Led by a desire to equip chronically underfunded voting rights advocates with state-of-the-art data analytics, the program uses best-in-class cloud technology and a two trillion row geolocation-and-voting dataset to measure long lines and access disparities to the ballot box.

As Observing Democracy expands nationally for the 2022 midterm elections, our two Data for Democracy Fellows will play an integral role in New Data’s voter protection work alongside our nonprofit and media partners across the country.

Data Science & Policy Fellow

As Observing Democracy prepares for a national expansion timed for the 2022 midterm elections, our first Data Science & Policy Fellow will sit at the center of this work, bridging our data teams, grassroots voter protection organizations, and New Data’s volunteer corps.

Questions you’ll have the opportunity to address include:

  • What are the specific data and policy needs of our partners, and how can these be fulfilled from Observing Democracy data and dashboards?
  • How can you empower New Data’s volunteers to work with Observing Democracy data in satisfying our partners’ needs?
  • How can we use our data, including by integrating new data, to help our partners understand and respond to the crisis in voting rights?

Data Governance Fellow

The Data Governance Fellowship is designed for students enrolled in MLIS degree programs and will provide an immersive experience in building a data governance and curation program from scratch within a fast growing tech nonprofit.

Questions you’ll have the opportunity to address include:

  • How can we maximize both discovery and utility of data for analytical purposes while protecting sensitive data from unauthorized disclosure or misuse?
  • How do we best organize, document, and tag data collected and stored by New Data for analytical purposes?
  • What is the best approach for creating and maintaining a data asset inventory?

The Fellowship

The Data for Democracy Fellowship is full-time and remote from June 13 through August 26. Fellows receive a $10,000 stipend.

The Data for Democracy Fellowship is open to students currently enrolled in a master’s program who are authorized to work in the U.S. We are particularly interested in considering candidates who have a demonstrated interest in utilizing data for policy impact – especially democracy-related issues such as voting rights.
