Project Coordinator, Science Program Management, Science
Chan Zuckerberg Initiative
The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative was founded by Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg in 2015 to help solve some of society’s toughest challenges — from eradicating disease and improving education to addressing the needs of our local communities. Our mission is to build a more inclusive, just, and healthy future for everyone.
The Team
CZI supports the science and technology that will make it possible to help scientists cure, prevent, or manage all diseases by the end of this century. While this may seem like an audacious goal, in the last 100 years, biomedical science has made tremendous strides in understanding biological systems, advancing human health, and treating disease.
Achieving our mission will only be possible if scientists are able to better understand human biology. To that end, we have identified four grand challenges that will unlock the mysteries of the cell and how cells interact within systems — paving the way for new discoveries that will change medicine in the decades that follow:
- Building an AI-based virtual cell model to predict and understand cellular behavior
- Developing state-of-the-art imaging systems to observe living cells in action
- Instrumenting tissues to better understand inflammation, a key driver of many diseases
- Engineering and harnessing the immune system for early detection, prevention, and treatment of disease
CZI’s work in science includes grantmaking programs, open-source software development, and close collaboration with the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network. The CZ Biohub Network includes the San Francisco, Chicago, and New York Biohubs as well as the Chan Zuckerberg Imaging Institute. CZI also collaborates with institutional partners like the Kempner Institute for the Study of Natural & Artificial Intelligence at Harvard University. Join us in accelerating science.
The Opportunity
The Project Coordinator will join the Science Program Management team and will cross-functionally support the team that utilizes grantmaking and partnership development to accumulate data needed to power CZI’s Grand Challenges. Project coordinators at CZI carry critical responsibilities to: assist in project planning and scheduling; maintain project documentation; track project progress and update reports; coordinate meetings and follow up on action items; and support risk and issue tracking.
The Project Coordinator, Science Program Management, will play a pivotal role in managing the Airtable database to track data progress from generation by lab partners through processing, sequencing, ingestion, and registration. This role will collaborate closely with an accountable partner(s) within the function, who will oversee the end-to-end strategy, rollout of functional activities, and resolution of challenges. As the central processing hub, the Project Coordinator will ensure seamless coordination between lab partners, processing partners, and functional leads, maintaining transparency and accountability throughout the data lifecycle.
What You'll Do
Database Management & Tracking
- Maintain and update the Airtable database to ensure accurate tracking of data generation, processing, sequencing, and ingestion.
- Maintain data entry standards to ensure consistency across stakeholders.
- Generate reports and dashboards from database inputs to provide visibility into data status and expected timelines.
- Monitor database integrity, troubleshoot errors, and implement improvements as needed.
Stakeholder Coordination & Communication
- Serve as the primary communicator to program leads and, as directed/assigned, a secondary liaison for lab partners, sequencing facilities, processing partners, and CZI teams.
- Execute, under the supervision of the program leads, regular check-in points with program leads and external service providers to track data progress, ensure timely reporting, and address bottlenecks.
- Communicate deadlines, expectations, and status updates to relevant stakeholders.
- Escalate potential delays and work collaboratively to resolve issues impacting data flow or accessibility.
Deadline Management & Forecasting
- Predict when data is expected to arrive at CZI and be ready for ingestion/registration based on historical trends and current progress.
- Use database insights to proactively follow up internally on missed deadlines and delays in the data pipeline.
- Flag potential risks in project timelines and work with stakeholders to mitigate them.
- Provide leadership with status updates and recommended actions to keep projects on track.
What You'll Bring
- Experience managing and maintaining databases (Airtable experience preferred).
- Strong project coordination skills with the ability to manage multiple timelines and stakeholders.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to facilitate cross-functional collaboration.
- Detail-oriented mindset with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Ability to work independently while staying aligned with the broader goals of the project.
- Familiarity with biological research, sequencing technologies, or data pipelines is a plus.
Compensation
The Redwood City, CA base pay range for this role is $83,000 - $124,000. New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. Actual placement in range is based on job-related skills and experience, as evaluated throughout the interview process.
