The Opportunity: As Press Secretary, you’ll be an integral member of the WisDems Communications Team, managing a team of Deputy Press Secretaries to generate earned media in support of Democratic candidates up and down the ballot.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating with the Communications Director, Deputy Communications Director, and Research Director to develop, manage, and organize communications activities
  • Act as an on-the-record spokesperson on behalf of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin
  • Monitor and track breaking news to capitalize on rapid response opportunities
  • Regularly draft engaging press materials, including press releases, fact sheets, guest columns, and other items as needed
  • Manage a team of Deputy Press Secretaries to plan and execute regular press events to generate earned media
  • Build effective relationships with members of the Wisconsin media
  • Aid in the media preparation and staff media interviews with the chair, surrogates, and principals.
  • Manage direct reports in all aspects of their work and support their success in the role by conducting relevant coaching conversations, providing and receiving feedback, and creating an inclusive and engaging team culture. More specific tasks could include but are not limited to:
    • Managing and reviewing time off requests
    • Hiring new team members
    • Having constructive conversations with team members on performance
    • Building rapport and trust within your team
    • Leading projects and delegating tasks
  • On year requirements include working outside of normal work hours; including canvassing and other election-preparation as necessary

  • Manages a High Volume of Work with Efficiency - Has, or can create, a system for managing multiple projects at the same time without sacrificing quality
  • Clear, Precise, and Inclusive Communication - Proven track record of producing quality messaging documents while being keenly aware of addressing diverse audiences.
  • Effective Team Player - Ability to collaborate with colleagues to produce quality communications materials

Qualifications (Preferred):

  • Press Event Planning - Demonstrated skills in planning, executing and creating successful and engaging press events to generate earned media coverage; prior experience pitching reporters and planning press events.
