About Us: The Disability Culture Lab (DCL) is a nonprofit disability media and narrative lab with a mission to shift the narrative on disability from fear and pity to solidarity and liberation, and move the needle on ableism from indifference to action. We believe in a cross-disability and cross-movement approach to our work, which means we believe every issue is a disability issue, and disability is key to every social justice issue.
The Job: The Communications Associate will be a strong communicator across platforms, with basic design skills, strong writing skills, and good instincts on email and social media. In this position, they will assist with media pitching, social media posts, writing, editing, and digital content production as well as supporting the launch of our programs. Specifically, this position will support our soon-to-launch Disability Rising fellowship.
To succeed in this role, you need a love of details and a deep commitment to both disability and social justice. Minimal experience required.
The Communications Associate will also support administrative work to ensure the day-to-day functioning of DCL is a success as we build out our systems – including scheduling meetings, filing expense reports, and more. This is an entry-level communications job that is one third media relations, one third digital, and one third programmatic and administrative support.

We need you to have:
- 0-5+ years of experience in media relations, journalism, social justice communications, digital communications.
- Strong written, oral, and visual communications skills; Spanish language fluency a plus (but not required).
- Love of details.
- Interest in building an organization founded in values of radical empathy and radical inclusion by and for disabled people.
- Desire and ability to work in a start up environment building something new.
- Desire and ability to work collaboratively with a team that is inclusive, diverse, and remote.
- Commitment to the mission and values of Disability Culture Lab and Disability Culture Lab Action as social justice organizations.
- Demonstrated commitment to the liberation of disabled people, immigrant communities, Indigenous people, Black people, LGBTQIA2S+ people, people of color, Muslim people, religious minorities, and folks at the intersections of all of the above.
We’d like you to have experience in at least three (3) of these:
- Pitching local and national media outlets with proven results.
- Managing social media accounts and creating social media plans.
- Drafting press releases, statements, and advisories.
- Supporting press management and/or social media management for actions and events.
- Leading or supporting communications for a social justice campaign.
- Graphic design.
- Community organizing.
- Disability justice community building.
Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position with full benefits requiring 32 hours per week. Schedules are flexible, but the majority of the 32 hours should generally be worked Monday through Thursday between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. ET, or Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. ET.
Work Environment: The office environment requires using the computer, phone, and other routine office equipment.
Physical Requirements: This position is largely sedentary, with prolonged periods of working at a computer.
Travel: This position requires up to 5% travel time for internal meetings, retreats, conferences and other events.
