eQual is a public benefit corporation that provides software and data services to help people-centered organizations qualify proposed laws and constitutional rights for the ballot. We are seeking a Back End & Data Engineer who will report to our CEO.

This experienced, highly-motivated individual will lead engineering for eQual’s software platform and Data & Quality Control Services.

ABOUT eQUAL

eQual serves statewide ballot initiative campaign customers working to advance policy on issues such as reproductive rights, voting rights, gun safety, minimum wage, democracy reform, and reform of abusive debt collection. In 2022, eQual was selected to join the Higher Ground Labs accelerator. Higher Ground Labs is a venture fund investing in technology for political progress.

The eQual software platform enables ballot measure campaigns to harness grassroots energy to get petition signatures for qualification. Clients use eQual to recruit signers and volunteers, onboard and manage signature gathering teams, and track and validate petitions and signatures.

eQual’s Data & Quality Control Service (Data & QC) ensures signatures comply with legal requirements and count toward qualification. Poor QC has historically cost campaigns millions - due to either excess collection of signatures or failure to collect enough to qualify. Our Data & QC Service addresses this critical issue. Our team of 50+ Data & QC Specialists validate signatures and capture signer/circulator data. The process employs eQual platform workflows, voter file integrations, and other automation tools.

We are seeking a Back End & Data Engineer to lead the development, performance and availability of eQual’s back end and the tools that support our Data and QC service.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead backend and data engineering for eQual’s web application, which has been in production and actively used by campaign customers since 2021, and is continually evolving
• Use MySQL and other data tools to scrub & standardize platform data, and create regular reports and dashboard views for individual campaign clients and for Data & QC team member performance assessment
• Develop requirements for and build generalized automation routines that make Data & QC reporting and dashboard views scalable across multiple campaign clients
• Integrate platform data with external data, including voter files, geographical relationships, etc
• Collaborate with the CEO on architecture and infrastructure decisions with focus on flexibility, scalability, reliability and performance
• Define requirements for and coordinate with any external development resources needed to complete a project as specified
• Create processes to routinely evaluate data integrity based on expected data parameters and relationships. Develop data cleaning and matching processes
• Own platform monitoring, metrics & reporting

QUALIFICATIONS

• 3+ years experience as a software or data engineer, shipping production code
• Deep understanding of backend architecture, data models and large datasets
• Experience developing backend systems and infrastructure using PHP (ideally in the Laravel framework), MySQL, and AWS
• Proficient at cleaning and matching data across multiple datasets
• Proficient using MySQL to answer questions, measure trends, and manipulate data
• Have defined and implemented RESTtful APIs
• Experience with Python, JavaScript, OCR, and ML is a plus

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS The salary range for this position is $100k - 150k per year, commensurate with experience, plus stock options. We provide healthcare benefits and offer unlimited PTO with approval.

We are remote-first, and use occasional in-person meetups to foster the relationship building, spontaneity, feedback and collaboration often missing in remote work.
