Organization Overview:

The New Florida Majority is an independent organization working to increase the voting and political power of marginalized and excluded constituencies toward an inclusive, equitable, and just Florida.


Job Description:

The Lead Organizer is responsible for building NewFM’s base. The Lead Organizer will work with the Organizing Director and a team of community organizers to identify opportunities to build and win citywide campaigns aligned with NewFM’s issue-based priorities: climate action, gender justice, racial equity and voting rights. The candidate will cultivate new relationships while supporting and strengthening current organizational relationships with members, partners and allies. The Lead Organizer will develop and implement training opportunities for the organizing staff, canvassers, members and volunteers. The Lead Organizer reports to the Organizing Director.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic vision and direction (along with staff and leaders) for building NewFM’s power and influence on citywide policy issues and politics.
  • Ensure the solidity and consistency of the New Florida Majority’s organizing model and community organizing programs in diverse communities of South Florida.
  • Guide the development of staff members and volunteers’ abilities to be effective organizers and community leaders.


Program Development and Coordination:

  • Coordinate various programs and projects in active NewFM communities/neighborhoods to recruit and mobilize our base.
  • Train and develop a team of community organizers to meet organizational goals, lead local campaigns, recruit volunteers and develop leaders.
  • Engage local community leaders and partner organizations around NewFM’s strategic priorities
  • Ensure implementation of quantitative objectives in membership recruitment and development. Track and support multiple programs and trouble shoot.
  • Lead program evaluation and development of new programs/campaigns.


Organizational Leadership :

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with local partner organizations, allied groups, community leaders, and public officials.
  • Represent NewFM in forums, public meetings, and community coalitions by working with the communications staff to develop coherent community relations and building community visibility.


Training and member development :

  • Design and implement organization-wide development program(s) to sharpen strategic analysis, deepen political education, and develop precise skills relevant to organizing and campaign goals.
  • Guide qualitative leadership development program with organizing staff, canvassing staff, members and leaders
  • Coordinate training series – identify needs, develop workshops, conduct training and document curriculum.
  • Model worthy practices to address dynamics of race, class and gender.


Direct NewFM’s volunteer Electoral Campaigns

  • Support local progressive candidate campaigns and lead volunteer campaign operations, in coordination and with approval of NewFm’s Political Director.
  • Develop campaign strategies and planning including methodology, target area(s), research, data, analysis, staffing, technology and budget for volunteer led local electoral campaigns.
  • Assist and provide leadership on campaign communication strategies such as messaging, scripts, literatures, press releases, and other printed materials; campaigns field strategies such as goal setting and budgeting; campaign data analysis such as technology, targets, and reporting.
  • Coordinate volunteer GOTV activities.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • The ideal candidate is a seasoned organizer, a strategic campaign planner, and an experienced staff manager and a leader with grassroots, labor, and/or political organizing experience.
  • Applicant must share a commitment to the organization's mission and have at least 5 (five) years of experience in community organizing and training, including supervision experience.
  • Strong track record of winning concrete campaign victories, mobilizing large numbers of people into action and building community leadership.
  • Experience supervising and/or managing others; at least three organizers and managing work teams.
  • Self-motivated, ability to take initiative and ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to motivate, mentor and support others in the development of their own skills and leadership.
  • Ability to work independently, yet collaboratively, according to goals of the organization.
  • Ability to interact with and understanding of persons of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and contribute to our diverse, community-based organization.
  • Proficiency with word-processing, data base and e-mail required.
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines.
  • Fluency in English is required, and capacity in Spanish or Creole is beneficial.
