About the Role
Friends From The City is seeking a seasoned Senior Backend Drupal Developer to support the redesign and content migration of the NY State Parks & Recreation public-facing website. This site is being rebuilt in Drupal 10 using Gesso, an open-source base theme by Forum One, and follows strict accessibility and editorial standards.
The legacy system is a mix of custom .NET content management (locations, events, alerts), static pages, a WordPress blog, and PDF-based content. This engagement will involve a full rebuild and re-architecture of the backend to support more modern, flexible content workflows, heavy use of the Paragraphs module, and custom API development to handle structured content migration and integration.
The responsibilities for this role are:
- Lead backend development for a Drupal 10 site using Gesso
- Plan and execute a multi-source migration (custom .NET CMS, static HTML, WordPress, PDFs)
- Configure and implement Paragraphs, Groups, content types, taxonomies, and views
- Build custom API endpoints to integrate location/event data from legacy systems
- Ensure platform performance, scalability, and reliability
- Collaborate with a cross-functional team (PM, designers, frontend devs, QA, content team)
- Support post-launch improvements and training documentation
6+ years of backend Drupal development experience (Drupal 9/10)
Demonstrated experience with:
- Paragraphs module
- Groups module
- Migrate API / Drush
- Custom API developments
Experience migrating structured and unstructured content (hundreds to thousands of pages)
Familiarity with component-based themes (Gesso or similar)
Strong understanding of Drupal permissions and editorial workflows
Comfortable working with accessibility standards (508/WCAG)
Excellent communication and documentation skills
Git/GitHub fluency
U.S.-based (1099)
Note: This is a 1099 contract position. As an independent contractor, you will not be eligible for company benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, or retirement contributions.
