Level: Senior Manager

This role is being offered as a 12-month contract with an extension based on performance against key metrics (extension is also dependent on the organization securing registration in Ethiopia which is ongoing.)

Role Overview:

GiveDirectly is in an exciting period of growth and is looking to bring on a Senior Manager to help launch its operations in Ethiopia. In this role, you will be crucial in developing opportunities for new business, building partnerships in Ethiopia as well as, and designing, launching, and managing new programs. This is an opportunity to drive impact and innovation in the cash sector at a time when cash is receiving unprecedented attention and interest in the public eye.

Responsibilities:

  • Overall accountability for successful implementation of all GD projects in country end-to-end, including owning rich project management plans
  • Oversee large field teams and the management of a contact centre oriented around recipient service
  • Coordinate across multiple in country and global teams to ensure coordinated approach to project delivery
  • Managing relations with donors, other partners, and high priority vendors
  • Contribute to project design and continuous improvement, including assessing trade-offs of different design decisions (e.g. targeting, payments, customer service)
  • Define business requirements and collaborating with GD’s global tech team to ready project-specific tech builds and ensure that they meet project-specific requirements
  • People management, including providing ongoing coaching and candid feedback to cultivate exceptional talent.
  • Data analysis and interpretation, including monitoring key performance indicators of quality and efficiency to ensure projects are meeting or exceeding GD standards, so that we deliver dollars to recipients well, quickly, and as planned
  • Risk mitigation and response, for example as may regard safeguarding, anti-fraud, security, etc.
  • Reporting to funders and management
  • Model a strong team culture rooted in GD’s values
  • Other duties as required

End-to-end project management (lead)

  • Own a rich project management plan and coordinate with stakeholders to ensure successful end-to-end execution
  • Design operational models for new programs, including assessing trade-offs of different design decisions (e.g. targeting, payments, customer service)
  • Define, track, and report operational and efficiency metrics
  • Dynamically identify operational vulnerabilities (e.g. fraud, brand risk etc) and create solutions to de-risk
  • Directly supervise multi-layered teams whose responsibilities include field team hiring and management, operations quality assurance, and business diligence support

Project and People Management (lead)

  • Lead cross-functional project teams, managing internal stakeholders and ensuring strong delivery of projects.
  • Directly manage one or more Managers to deliver high-quality operations and programming
  • Create a strong team culture rooted in GD’s values.
  • Cultivate and grow exceptional talent.
  • Establish and maintain high-quality relationships with donors and operational partners
  • Drive communication and alignment across a variety of internal and external stakeholders including GD senior management, donors, operational partners, researchers, and payment providers

Government engagement (support)

  • Follow-up as needed with various government entities in order to ensure that GiveDirectly is fully registered and has all the authorizations needed
  • Help get approvals for tax, opening an office, and other various responsibilities as we set-up our operation
  • Represent GD at government level if and when required
  • Ensure compliance to Government directives and guidelines

Partnership building (support)

  • Identify and pursue fundraising opportunities for new programs
  • Collaborate with global partnerships team to create content to drive donor conversations and position GiveDirectly as a leader in the Ethiopia cash space
  • Represent GD in the Ethiopia cash working group and other fora
  • Attending in-country meetings, as appropriate, to identify possible partners for future collaboration

Skills and Experience

  • 4-7+ years of work experience in a problem-solving heavy role (field management, consulting, analytics, government relations)
  • Exceptional ability to work analytically through complex operational questions & run robust analyses to inform management and programming decisions
  • Strong communications skills, including speaking, writing, presenting, and negotiating across diverse audiences, including government
  • Comfort and ability to represent GD at all levels, from senior government officials and donors to local community leaders
  • Enthusiasm for fast-paced environments, which may lack a pre-defined playbook for success and involve significant “learning by doing”
  • Ability to approach tasks with resourcefulness and to work in a highly self-directed manner
  • Ability to manage day-to-day operations while simultaneously building more robust, efficient systems
  • Experience and high comfort level working in developing-country or high-risk settings
  • Prior experience working in Ethiopia is very highly preferred
  • Strong interest in advancing the values and mission of GiveDirectly

    Compensation

    At GiveDirectly, we strive to pay our employees generously and equitably. We use an accredited third party salary aggregator to ensure that staff’s total compensation package (base compensation + bonus) falls within the 75th percentile of similar roles, at similar organizations. We also have a no negotiation policy to ensure we are paying staff equitably across roles.

    • The gross base salary for this role is $66,000.
    • Annual bonus with a 10% bonus index.

About the hiring process

Format: The hiring process follows the same general outline for all open roles:

First interview (30 mins)
Take home skills assignment (~2 hours)
Second interview (1 hour)*
Third interview (1 hour)*
Final interview (1 hour)
Reference checks (30 mins each)

*For some roles, second & third interviews are combined into a panel interview. If there are adjustments or variations on this process, those changes will be communicated during the first interview.
