Hours: Full-time, exempt

Target Start Term: January 4, 2027

Location: Remote; Possibility of 3-5 days per quarter of east coast travel

Compensation: $70,000-100,000/year, commensurate with experience

Reports to: Executive Director

Manages: Development Director, Operations and Field Director

Overview:

IfNotNow is building a multiracial, multiethnic, cross-class movement of American Jews organizing our community to end US support for Israel’s apartheid system and call for equality, justice, and a thriving future for all Palestinians and Israelis. We are fighting for a vision of collective liberation where Jewish safety does not come at the expense of others, but is intertwined with the liberation of all people. 

We are seeking a highly organized, relational, and strategic Chief of Staff to maintain the internal culture and infrastructure of the organization, and develop systems and structures to advance organizational and movement strategy. The Chief of Staff will be a key part of the organization’s senior leadership, along with the Executive Director (ED), Campaign Director (CD), and Field Organizing Director (FOD). The Chief of Staff will support staff management, and ensure financial and organizational stability. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership abilities, deep emotional intelligence, and experience in financial and operational oversight and management.

Responsibilities:

Strategy Design & Implementation

  • Serve on the Leadership team with Executive Director, Campaign Director, and Field Organizing Director to collectively set strategic direction at the campaign and organizational level; build alignment processes for staff, members, and partners

  • Build and lead strategic movement culture, particularly culture that supports multiracial movement building and Jewish communal organizing

  • Support departments to develop and implement clear 1-year goals and strategies; work with Technology Director to ensure systems for tracking goals. 

  • Attend weekly meetings of the Strategy Coordination Team; provide programmatic support and consultation where needed, particularly with an eye towards integrating internal organization-development priorities

Management 

  • Manage 2-3 direct reports, including Fundraising Director and Finance & Operations Director; support direct reports to advance strategic workstreams, set goals and metrics, and remain accountable to work plans 

  • Coordinate 4-person Organizational Development department including the Operations and Finance Director, Development Director and Executive Director 

  • Plan and lead staff meetings and coordination spaces in consultation with the Leadership Team, including a weekly all-staff meeting and a bi-weekly meeting of Department Heads; plan and execute staff retreats yearly

  • Design and implement full team training, including manager support and training;  Support individual professional development plans and training for all staff. 

Personnel and Culture

  • Set expectations and create systems for staff and organizational goal setting, work planning, and evaluation, especially embedding multiracial, cross-class organizing into our strategy

  • Regularly assess and adapt staff culture to best meet the needs of our strategy and staff, with the support of Leadership Team, staff and consultants 

  • Identify, design, and implement personnel policies. Maintain and manage performance evaluations, personnel and performance issues, and hiring, onboarding, and offboarding systems 

  • Serve as main point of contact with the staff union and as lead negotiator for contract bargaining

Finance and Operations

  • Maintain a deep familiarity with the organization’s budget and financial systems: support Finance & Operations Director in creating the annual fiscal year organizational budget, make meaning of track cash flows and burn rates; identify legal and compliance risks and implement mitigation strategies; and ensure seamless operation of HR and operations functions. 

  • Consult and support on the development of policies, practices, and infrastructure impacting organizational health and development

  • Ensure staff are regularly trained in organizational policies and practices, including HR, finance, compliance and cultural competency at appropriate times relating to our strategy

Board Coordination

  • Serve as point of contact for the Board of Directors related to organizational health and development, especially in the creation and passage of the annual budget, audits, etc.

  • Regularly meet with Board Executive Committee to help guide board activities in service of the organization’s overall health and financial sustainability

  • Attend board meetings and subcommittee meetings as needed

Fundraising

  • Support major donor stewardship by holding a portfolio of 15-20 major donors 

  • Support membership drives and emergent fundraising opportunities

Essential Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience in personnel management, especially of staff in positions of leadership

  • 2+ years experience in project or program management

  • 2+ years experience demonstrated commitment to multiracial organizing and/or community building; awareness around dynamics of power and privilege and able to build strong relationships across difference, including when conflict arises 

  • 1+ years experience in organizational budgeting and/or financial management

  • 1+ years experience in leadership and professional development; developing mentorship and professional development plans and trainings to support people to grow in their roles

  • Excellent communicator, storyteller, and relationship-builder; able to model and facilitate strong culture, build trust and navigate complex dynamics amongst staff. Able to give and receive constructive feedback, communicate across differences, and reflect with self-awareness

  • Effective builder and leader of systems and high level planning processes to bring strategic vision to life

  • Strategic alignment and commitment to organizing U.S. Jews against U.S. support for Israel’s apartheid system and call for equality, justice, and a thriving future for all Palestinians and Israelis

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with union workplaces

  • Experience with performance evaluation and corrective action processes for staff

  • Experience organizing locally or nationally with IfNotNow 

  • Experience with grassroots organizing or social movement experience in base-building organizations, issue-based campaigns, and/or social movement campaigns

  • Experience managing donor relationships/fundraising

  • Experience with accessibility and disability justice and practices

  • Experience in data analysis and tracking systems

  • Ability to navigate a variety of different coalitional spaces, including but not limited to Jewish, Progressive, and Palestine solidarity spaces. We also welcome applicants with experience organizing in Black, Asian, Latine, and other multiracial coalitional spaces.

Benefits & Compensation: The salary range is $70,000-100,000 annually. IfNotNow determines compensation based on a variety of factors, including geography, experience, and a self-selected needs-based bonus.
