About Mighty Acorn

At Mighty Acorn, we make it easier for governments to deliver world-class digital services. From renewing a fishing license to applying for unemployment benefits, we build digital services that enhance public trust and satisfaction.

Our vision is a world where “good enough for government work” returns to its pedestal: fast, reliable, and frustration-free. We achieve this by empowering people, increasing transparency, breaking down silos, and moving together toward a shared goal.

Specializing in modern software development, DevSecOps, and scalable infrastructure, we focus on leveraging automation to manage complexity, accelerate transformation, shorten feedback loops, and reduce risk to build a world where government programs run reliably, smoothly, and efficiently.

While our team averages 10+ years of experience in the industry, we are a relatively new (formed in 2023) professional services company. Our government clients engage us to improve their digital products and services in a way that ensures better outcomes for their users and stakeholders. That means our clients hire us for our expertise, which we bill our time for.

About the Role

Mighty Acorn Digital partners with government agencies to modernize complex digital systems and services. It's the kind of work that touches how people apply for benefits, access health programs, and interact with government online. We're a mission-driven team hiring our first Communications Manager to work with us to build the function from the ground up.

This person will translate our strategy, delivery expertise, and team experiences into compelling content across multiple channels, growing our audience, building brand authority, and strengthening our position as a trusted partner in the government digital services space.

The right candidate is a sharp writer and strategic thinker who thrives at the intersection of mission and market. You understand the nuances of the civic tech space, can distill complex technical and policy ideas into accessible narratives, and are energized by the challenge of building something from scratch.

This is a fully remote position. Candidates must be based in and work from the contiguous United States, with at least a 5-hour overlap with 9am–5pm ET, Monday through Friday.

As the Communications Manager at Mighty Acorn Digital, you will:

  • Own and execute Mighty Acorn's communications calendar across LinkedIn, the company blog, and new content streams, including organic posting, engagement, and performance tracking to continuously refine strategy.

  • Collaborate with business and delivery teams to surface stories worth sharing, then write and edit long-form content (blog posts, case studies, announcements, thought leadership pieces) that takes those insights from concept to published.

  • Maintain and improve website content in collaboration with project, business development, and strategy teams, keeping messaging accurate, fresh, and aligned.

  • Utilize and support the development of the Mighty Acorn editorial voice and style guide to create content that reflects Mighty Acorn's mission, expertise, and culture.

  • Partner with the Business Development team to amplify wins, capabilities, and thought leadership relevant to target agencies.

  • Design and maintain editorial workflows and asset management practices that keep the team efficient and output consistent.

  • Navigate government project communications requirements (client branding guidelines, clearance workflows, visibility mandates) with sound judgment and without sacrificing content quality.

Candidate must-haves:

  • Bachelor's degree, ideally in communications, journalism, English, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

  • 3–5 years of experience in communications, content strategy, or editorial roles, ideally in or adjacent to the government technology, civic tech, or public sector consulting space.

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a portfolio demonstrating the ability to translate complex technical or policy ideas into compelling, accessible content.

  • Strong instincts for brand voice and editorial judgment. You know what a company should and shouldn't say, and why.

  • Proven ability to work across disciplines to extract experiences and insights and shape them into stories.

  • Self-directed and organized, with the ability to manage an editorial calendar and multiple content workstreams without close oversight.

  • Comfort building or formalizing a communications function in a small or early-stage organization.

Candidate nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with digital service delivery concepts (agile development, human-centered design, DevSecOps) and the ability to write about them credibly.

  • Experience navigating government project communications requirements, including client branding, clearance workflows, and agency visibility mandates.

  • Existing network or familiarity within the civic tech or federal/state digital services community.

  • Experience with CMS platforms (e.g., Webflow, WordPress) and email platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Substack, HubSpot).

Other requirements:

  • An ability to work efficiently, sometimes under tight deadlines.

  • A preference for transparency and an ability to be direct and transparent in your own communication.

  • An ability to adapt quickly and cope with temporarily ambiguous situations as requirements change.

  • This role requires work be performed from within the contiguous United States.

  • Candidates must either hold active US citizenship or a green card, and should possess work authorization that does not require any present or future visa sponsorship by Mighty Acorn Digital.

  • Candidates selected for the role must pass a criminal background check prior to their start date.

  • Candidates must have a fast (>100Mbps) and reliable internet connection and have a dedicated workspace with background noise at an appropriate level for audio calls.

If you don’t meet every requirement but believe you’d be great in this role, we’d love to hear from you! We’re committed to building diverse teams, and research shows that women and underrepresented groups often hesitate to apply unless they meet every qualification. Don't let that hold you back—let’s talk!
