Position Summary:
We are seeking one Seasonal Salt Marsh Stewards Coordinator to support our New York Coastal Resilience program on Long Island, NY. In 2026, Audubon will launch Year 2 of the NY Salt Marsh Stewards Program, a partnership with SUNY Farmingdale State College’s Science & Technology Entry Program (STEP) that engages 5-9 high school students from Title I schools in hands-on conservation and environmental stewardship.
The Coordinator will play a critical role in implementing this program, guiding student field trips to local salt marsh sites and supporting experiential learning in coastal ecology and restoration. Field trips and programming will be conducted in collaboration with STEP staff and under the supervision of the Senior Manager of Coastal Resilience.
In addition to youth engagement, the Coordinator will assist with pre-restoration monitoring at active salt marsh restoration sites. Responsibilities include surveying marsh vegetation, assessing habitat quality, monitoring birds and other wildlife, conducting water quality sampling, and supporting community outreach efforts.
Some weekend and holiday work may be required. Travel to and from field sites using a personal vehicle will be reimbursed.
Length of Assignment: June 8, 2026 – August 21, 2026
Hours: 7 hours/day, 35 hours/week
This role is on-site at the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center in Oyster Bay, NY.
Compensation:
$20.50 / hour
Additional Job Description
Essential Functions
Mentor and guide 5-9 high school students from our Salt Marsh Stewards Program in habitat restoration and monitoring efforts
Lead the Salt Marsh Stewards in activities such as invasive plant control, native plantings, fish surveys, bird surveys, water quality monitoring, and outreach events
Perform pre-restoration monitoring (saltmarsh bird surveys, fish surveys, water quality, etc.) at project sites
Conduct outreach and engagement activities, including tabling events and beach cleanups
Work with staff and volunteers in pre-restoration monitoring projects
Organize data and track restoration, monitoring, and outreach project/program metrics
Organize pictures, stories, and quotes for applicable newsletters, social media posts, etc. and provide them to Communications staff as needed
Maintain monitoring equipment and inventory items
Assist Senior Manager of Coastal Resilience and Director of Coastal Resilience as needed.
Write an end of the season report to document seasonal work.
Maintain and foster a culture of safety.
Partner with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.
Qualifications and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree/Associate’s degree (or significant course towards a degree) in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Conservation, Ornithology, or related subject
Must be comfortable traversing long distances, lifting heavy equipment, and working outside in harsh conditions (e.g., heat, mud, biting insects)
Must have experience with field work including surveys of plants and wildlife and/or water quality monitoring
Must have experience working with teenagers in the classroom or field setting
Must be comfortable working with groups and giving presentations (formally or informally)
Experience with Microsoft Office software, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Experience with YSI and GPS equipment preferred but not required
Comfortable driving a large, 15-person passenger van
Must hold a valid driver’s license and have access to reliable transportation
