BACKGROUND:

Care in Action, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit, nonpartisan group dedicated to fighting for dignity and fairness for the millions of domestic workers in the United States, most of whom are women of color and immigrant women.

The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) is the leading national voice for dignity and fairness for domestic workers in the United States. Founded in 2007, NDWA works for the respect, recognition, and inclusion in labor protections of domestic and home care workers across the country. NDWA is winning improved working conditions while building a powerful

movement rooted in the human rights, dignity and equality of domestic workers, home care workers, immigrant women, and Black women.

NDWA was founded in 2007 by domestic workers and organizers from around the country. Our national alliance has grown from this founding group of 13 organizations to now more than 70 affiliate organizations, and local chapters developed by NDWA. To date, the Alliance comprises more than 250,000 nannies, housekeepers, and home care workers in all 50 states.

Position Summary:

Care in Action and the National Domestic Workers Alliance seek a creative and nimble Compliance and Operations Director to help invest in and support the overall functioning and financial health of its team. Working at the intersection of reporting, payroll, finance, and organizing, this is an exciting opportunity for someone who understands campaigns, electoral expenditures, and how money tells the most accurate and clear story.

They will work closely with the Deputy Director(s), Office of the General Counsel, Organizing Director, Organizing Manager, and Finance team in order to ensure compliance throughout the organization, and when appropriate, act as a conduit or liaison with the Legal team. This role will also directly supervise and coach the Operations Coordinator.

PRIMARY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare expenditure reports to bodies such as the Federal Election Commission, campaigns, and state regulatory bodies, with the support of an external compliance firm.

  • Review and approve payroll for short-term hires such as canvassers and phonebankers, ensuring accuracy in compliance and budgetary coding.

  • Oversee policies and procedures specific to short-term hires, including employee handbook, employee benefits, and mass onboarding of personnel around electoral cycles.

  • Ensure state employer tax and unemployment accounts are up to date, with the support of an external payroll firm.

  • Manage the Operations Coordinator, supporting her to excellence and efficiency.

  • Assist in reviewing monthly or quarterly accounting and coding of expenses.

  • Support overall organizational operations through an equity lens with an eye towards ease and scale, making recommendations as needed.

  • Regularly review operational systems and make recommendations for improvements.

  • Assist with other administrative and operational duties as needed.

  • Participate in staff meetings, staff study, and staff retreats.

  • Attend supervision meetings and complete work plans and reports in a timely manner.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1-3 years of experience with the legal and compliance landscape of election-related activities and for 501(c)(4) organizations, PACs, and other entities.

  • Highly developed administrative skills, including being organized, motivated, and flexible under pressure.

  • Fierce attention to detail, with the ability to maintain a high level of data integrity.

  • Excellent computer skills, including high proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Excel).

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, keep organized in a fast-paced environment, manage simultaneous tasks, and adjust strategy to changing demands.

  • Strong understanding of basic accounting best practices and procedures, including human resources, payroll, bookkeeping, contract management, and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and laws related to nonprofit corporations.

  • Dedication to transparency and commitment to managing up with supervisors and leadership.

  • High degree of professionalism and the ability to maintain confidentiality when needed.

  • Excellent communication skills, both internal to the organization and with external partners.

  • Proven ability to build and nurture a diverse, respectful, and positive working environment and to coach supervisees and peers in somewhat inaccessible matters such as organizational compliance.

  • Belief in the leadership and political power of women of color, especially Black women.

  • Willingness to work long and unusual hours when needed, including nights and weekends where appropriate in a GOTV setting.

  • Commitment to all the ethical requirements of a civic engagement organization.

  • Experience in voter contact campaigns or settings is highly preferred.

  • Combination of education and experience in computerized composition, data development, accounting, or business administration preferred.

  • Able to Travel as needed
