BACKGROUND & POSITION SUMMARY

The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) is the leading national voice for dignity and fairness for domestic workers in the United States. NDWA works for the respect, recognition, and inclusion in labor protections of domestic and home care workers across the country. NDWA is winning improved working conditions while building a powerful movement rooted in the human rights, dignity and equality of domestic workers, home care workers, immigrant women and Black women.

NDWA was founded in 2007 by domestic workers and organizers from around the country. Our national alliance has grown from this founding group of 13 organizations to now more than 70 affiliate organizations and local chapters developed by NDWA. To date, the Alliance comprises more than 250,000 nannies, housekeepers, and home care workers in all 50 states.

Care in Action is a (501c4) nonprofit, nonpartisan group dedicated to fighting for dignity and fairness for the millions of domestic workers in the United States, most of whom are women. Founded in 2016, Care in Action is backed by tens of thousands of nannies, house cleaners, and care workers across the country. We provide the tools, training, and community working families need to make their voices heard, and organize and advocate for respect, recognition, and inclusion in labor protections.

NDWA and Care in Action seek a Deputy Communications Director to co-develop, co-manage, and execute communications strategy for NDWA and Care in Action state and federal campaigns and programs. The Deputy Communications Director would work hand-in-hand with the Sr. Communications Director to run the daily communications operation, strengthen the narrative of the organization, oversee narrative implementation within NDWA and Care in Action, and lead cross-team collaboration with NDWA/Care in Action directors to meet organizational goals.

PRIMARY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and implement new processes for the communications team that streamline brief development, collaboration, and approvals

  • Support develop of and manage communications strategies for various organizational campaigns and rapid response moments

  • Track and analyze national public discourse and debates on our issues to assist with development of overall strategy and response

  • Identify opportunities to build the NDWA and Care in Action brand for external audiences, including media, donors, and supporters

  • Manage the Media Relations Director and Communications Coordinator, as well as the Spokesperson Manager (to be hired). This includes the development of ongoing growth and work plans.

  • Lead cross-team coordination with the Campaigns Director, Digital Director, and Field Director to set supporting communications strategy, messaging, and external engagement plans

  • General communications duties, as assigned by the Sr. Communications Director

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Five to seven years co-directing or leading communications work in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field

  • A proven track record of developing and executing strategic communications plans

  • Experience in leading and managing a team with consideration, empathy, and intentionality. Must understand that the mission of our work translates directly to our models of leadership

  • Experience in building and designing dynamic processes inside and outside of communications or creative teams

  • Experience in developing narrative, messaging, talking points and other communications assets

  • Familiarity with political and advocacy space. Previous experience collaborating with movement, coalition, and partner spaces, including public and elected officials, a plus.

  • High performer capable of holding multiple campaigns and projects with complexity at once

  • Alignment with NDWA and Care in Action’s vision and values, including a commitment to economic, race and gender justice – must have the ability to deploy historical and cultural context in our strategic plans as needed

  • Creative problem solver with the ability to pivot and innovate to adapt to the changing political/policy landscape

  • Outstanding communication, written, verbal, and organizational skills

  • Proven ability to learn quickly, work independently, meet multiple deadlines with a keen attention to detail

  • Ability to work and collaborate with diverse staff remotely and as part of a high-performing team, in a fast-paced, experimental organization

  • Spanish proficiency a plus
