Position Summary
The System Architect will have a passion for designing secure, scalable, and compliant health data systems to lead a mission-critical platform: the Hospital Quality Reporting (HQR) system at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).In this role, you will architect solutions that directly support the nation's healthcare quality improvement initiatives. What you'll do
- Architect and lead development of a robust and compliant HQR system supporting CMS’s national quality programs.
- Guide engineering teams in building resilient FHIR API architectures that adhere to strict federal standards.
- Ensure high availability, secure data backups, and disaster recovery strategies that eliminate data loss and maintain uptime.
- Drive the adoption of automated testing, continuous integration, and security-first DevOps practices.
- Design high-throughput, scalable architectures capable of processing large volumes of health data in real time.
- Collaborate with CMS stakeholders and cross-functional teams to ensure all systems align with compliance goals while minimizing developer burden.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and industry standards to future-proof our architecture.
Required skills
- Proven success delivering FHIR API-based systems
- System Design and Architecture – Designing scalable, reliable, and secure IT infrastructures integrating hardware, software, cloud, databases, and APIs
- Programming Proficiency – Knowledge of modern programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, JavaScript, C++) for system development and integration
- Cloud Computing Expertise – Experience with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud to build cloud-based solutions
- Data Management and Modeling – Organizing, storing, and modeling data to support system operations and analytics
- Security Implementation – Applying robust security measures to protect systems from cyber threats
- Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills – Evaluating systems, identifying issues, and creating innovative solutions aligned with business goals
- Networking Knowledge – Understanding network infrastructure and protocols for seamless system integration
- Business Acumen and Resource Management – Aligning IT solutions with business objectives and managing project resources and budgets effectively
- Communication and Leadership – Clearly conveying technical concepts, leading teams, making decisions, and fostering collaboration
- Adaptability and Continuous Learning – Staying updated with evolving technologies and continuously enhancing skills.
Desired skills
- 8+ years of experience leading architectural design and implementation of enterprise-scale systems, preferably in the federal healthcare domain
- Strong knowledge of compliance frameworks, including security, privacy, and federal IT standards

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Must meet any other requirements for government contracts for which candidates are hired.
