Position Description

NAL/AF is seeking a dedicated and highly motivated Director of Development who can set the direction and ensure longevity of our organization as well as develop and implement an ambitious revenue strategy and bring the story of NAL/AF’s value and impact to life for existing and prospective stakeholders. The successful candidate will be analytical and creative, collaborate well with a passionate and fun staff, and coordinate and manage multiple projects. The ideal candidate will have 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) fundraising experience as well as experience in immigrant, leadership, civic engagement, democracy organizations, and/or political campaigns. They thrive in a small team environment and should be comfortable developing systems and processes, excited about bringing big ideas to the table, and an outstanding communicator. Above all, candidates should be passionate about advocating for underrepresented communities’ and be invested in NAL’s mission to equip immigrants and refugees for civic leadership.

The Director of Development will lead all fundraising efforts, including creating and executing long-term plans to support the organizational growth of our 501(c)3 and 501(c)4. They will also provide strategic leadership for the planning, implementation, evaluation, integration, and administration of the development division. As a member of the Senior Staff, the Director of Development advises the CEO/President, Chief Operating Officer, and the Board of Directors on fundraising goals, cultivates external relationships to engage donors, expands the organization’s visibility, and ensures compliance with grant requirements and reporting.

Responsibilities

Strategy and Execution (50%)

  • Develop and execute a multi-year fundraising plan that generates revenue at both the national level and for NAL/AF’s priority states.
  • Work closely with the Executive and Development team to establish fundraising goals, set strategic priorities, and develop and meet budget. Create an annual department budget and plan overall revenue for the organization.
  • Continuously evaluate and innovate fundraising strategies and tactics and lead strategic initiatives.
  • Develop multi-year revenue plans and forecasts.
  • Cement NAL/AF’s case for support understanding our unique selling proposition and space in the broader ecosystem.
  • Orient and engage Board members on the development strategy and steward them to be active fundraisers/meet fundraising goals.
  • Participate in the Senior Staff team and contribute to overall organization planning and strategy.
  • Collaborate with the Finance Team to complete grant budgets and reports, track revenue progress, and ensure consistency between grant budgets, program requirements, and resource allocation.
  • Track proposal and reporting deadlines, ensure that all submitted materials are accurate and comply with any funder requirements.
  • Co-develop and manage the organization’s impact communication efforts, including the annual report.
  • Work with the Communications, Political, and Program Teams on enhanced data management, messaging, and metrics that strengthen fundraising and align messaging and goals across the organization.

Donor Recruitment and Management (40%)

  • Identify, cultivate, and manage relationships with current and prospective individual donors, donor advisors, corporate supporters, and foundations from various geographies and sectors.
  • Work closely with the CEO/President to cultivate prospects with the capacity for high-level gifts and steward donors to ensure continued giving.
  • Supervise one team member and nurture their professional development. Oversee the team’s efforts, including implementation of digital fundraising campaigns, individual giving efforts, and donor cultivation events.
  • Update our audience and funders and ensure all proposals, reports, and donor communications happen in a timely manner.
  • Plan and execute fundraising events and gatherings for donors, foundations, and corporate partners.
  • Manage and collaborate with fundraising contractors and consultants to connect with donors and generate development materials.

Other (10%)

  • Cultivate an organizational culture of philanthropy and empower all staff to envision themselves as fundraisers.
  • Contribute to efforts to raise NAL/AF’s national profile through branding efforts, website features and improvements, and storybanking.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Alignment with NAL/AF’s mission and values, and a commitment to serving immigrant communities, and building a multiracial democracy. Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity to the needs of immigrants, refugees and undocumented and under-documented communities.
  • 7+ years fundraising experience, preferably someone who has pre-existing relationships with foundations.
  • Experience managing a team.
  • Stellar relationship management, communication, interpersonal skills, and written abilities.
  • Ability to convey the organizational message and inspire donors to invest.
  • Critical thinker, strategic planner, analytical, and meticulously detail-oriented.
  • Commitment to organization’s mission and understanding of current policy issues and political landscape.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently as well as within a collaborative environment,  and with diverse internal and external partners.
  • Flexibility and the ability to prioritize assignments to meet deadlines.
  • Experience managing and tracking budgets.
  • Skilled at grant management and familiarity with a fundraising CRM.
  • Ability to interact with senior executives and community leaders.
  • Open to learning, iterating, and growing with the organization as it evolves.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently.

Salary and Benefits

NAL/AF offers a competitive salary, benefits, and leave policies.
