Position Overview

The GIS Mapping Technician supports political campaigns and election programs by creating, managing, and maintaining high-quality geospatial data used for voter outreach, field operations, and strategic planning. This role is responsible for building and managing geospatial datasets for voter precincts, canvassing turfs, and electoral districts.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable working with large datasets, and thrives on addressing large and complex data challenges relating to national data, and excels in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments where accuracy and reliability are critical.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain GIS layers related to elections and field operations, including precincts, districts, turfs, and assignment zones.
  • Prepare canvassing and outreach maps for field staff, organizers, and volunteers.
  • Process and validate voter file-based geography, including address points, households, and precinct boundaries.
  • Build and manage custom turfs for door-to-door canvassing, relational organizing, and vote-by-mail chase programs.
  • Support geocoding, address validation, and spatial joins between voter records and geographic boundaries.
  • Produce maps and exports for use in mobile canvassing apps, field tools, and reporting dashboards.
  • Assist with Election Day mapping needs such as polling locations, vote centers, drop boxes, and incident reporting.
  • Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and compliance with campaign and organizational standards.
  • Troubleshoot mapping issues related to overlapping turfs, boundary alignment, or data integrity.
  • Respond quickly to urgent data and mapping requests during peak campaign periods.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Political Science, Urban Planning, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 1-3 years of hands-on experience with GIS tools in a professional setting
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, or comparable GIS platforms
  • Strong understanding of precincts, districts, and political geography
  • Experience working with large tabular datasets and performing spatial joins
  • Exceptional attention to detail and quality control
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines in high-stakes election environments
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with voter files or political datasets
  • Familiarity with canvassing, phone banking, and field organizing workflows
  • Experience building walk lists, turf packets, or mobile canvassing exports
  • Basic scripting or data skills (SQL, Python, or similar) for processing large datasets
  • Knowledge of census geography and redistricting concepts
  • Understanding of data privacy, compliance, and responsible voter data handling

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $70,000 – $90,000 per year, based on skills and experience
