The Reporters Committee serves news organizations, reporters, editors, documentary filmmakers, media lawyers, and many more who use its online resources.

Job Description

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press seeks a Staff Writer & Communications Assistant to support the content needs of a growing and vibrant nonprofit organization. The position will report to the Director of Communications. The salary range for this position is $60,000 to $65,000.

The Reporters Committee has significantly expanded its programming in the past five years and prioritizes communication about its work and impact through a variety of content channels, including its website, grant and funding proposals, and media outreach. The Staff Writer & Communications Assistant will draft content that is key for public relations and fundraising purposes, including grant proposals, case studies, and impact reports.

This position is well-suited for a highly organized person with good writing and editing skills and the ability to support multiple initiatives across the organization and effectively communicate the Reporters Committee’s mission and impact to a variety of audiences including donors, journalists, and partners.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with legal, development, and communications teams to effectively communicate program impacts to funding partners and external audiences

  • Draft narrative elements of grant proposals, interim reports, and renewals

  • Draft blog posts, statements, social media, case studies, and other material as needed

  • In collaboration with the Development team, draft content for the Annual Report

  • Use AP and RCFP style to review and copy edit grant materials, web and other content

  • Monitor daily news cycle for reports relevant to the RCFP projects and initiatives

  • Maintain lists of print, broadcast and new media contacts

  • Assist with pitching strategy and distribution process

Qualifications

  • Zero (0) to three (3) years of professional public relations, media, writing or other relevant professional experience in a fast-paced work environment

  • Demonstrated knowledge of AP style

  • Excellent research, writing, editing, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to ability to articulate the mission and programs of the Reporters Committee to external and prospective partners

  • Strong judgment and instincts for media and communications-related work

  • Knowledge and familiarity with the news media and social media landscapes

  • The ability to demonstrate grace under pressure while handling multiple projects and meeting tight deadlines

  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team

  • A high level of computer literacy including Microsoft Office and Google Suite. Proficiency with Salesforce (specifically Nonprofit Success Pack) strongly preferred, knowledge of other development CRMs welcome

  • Photography experience a plus

  • Familiarity with WordPress a plus, but not required

  • Experience with digital marketing and social media metrics a plus

  • Commitment to the mission and values of RCFP
