PURPOSE: This position will work with the Deputy Director for climate and environmental justice and the Government Relations Department to support SEIU Locals in driving a climate justice agenda, including member education, policy work, field activity and coalition work with partner organizations.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: (Any one position may not include all of the specific duties and responsibilities listed. Examples provide a general summary of the work required and should not be treated as a total and complete list of expected duties to be performed by employees in the classification.)

  • Acts as SEIU point person with national and state climate partners to direct program strategies and implementation with local unions in the states.
  • Communicate and coordinate with local union leadership and staff to carry our climate and environmental justice program objectives.
  • Support local union staff and leadership to develop and grow local union member climate and environmental justice committees and member activist base.
  • Develops relationships and coordinates with other departments/divisions in SEIU and allied organizations to strategize on federal priorities, and to support field, communications and policy objectives.
  • Provides local union policy support for state based policy and legislative climate related initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as required to support the climate program and staff.
  • Supervision of staff on a project by project basis.
  • Participate in a variety of SEIU priorities and activities as a member of the SEIU Government Relations team including conferences, lobby days and special projects.

CONTACTS: Includes SEIU staff across multiple departments, Local Union staff, community and allied organizations, and other individuals and/or organizations related to the successful execution of the Field Program.

DIRECTION AND DECISION-MAKING: Reports to the Deputy Director for climate and environmental justice and must be able to act and organize time independently.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Seven to-nine years of experience working on political campaigns, including demonstrated experience in developing and leading electoral campaigns. A high level of judgment, ability to take initiative and work independently; must be able to work with local union staff, worker leaders, and staff. Additionally, education or experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Must be able to handle multiple priority projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines.
  • Previous experience with the labor movement or other advocacy organizations preferred.
  • Excellent writing, verbal, and analytical communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of advocacy campaigns.
  • Ability to develop and train staff and worker leaders in the skills needed for the campaign.
  • Ability to write and proofread communications materials.
  • Work with a high level of independence.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Must have the ability to work in an office (or similar) setting with or without reasonable accommodation. Travel in addition to long and extended work hours are required.
