Reports to: National Director of Communications and Media
Position Summary: Somos is seeking a highly motivated Communications Manager to support our Communications and Media Department. The Communications Manager will play a key role in driving our organization’s growth, amplifying our mission and engaging audiences through earned media opportunities on an instate and national level. This position will work with a team of communications professionals to craft and execute innovative media campaigns on a national and local platform that help tell the Somos story.

We are dedicated to empowering and educating Latino communities with the knowledge, tools and opportunities they need to participate in our democracy and create meaningful change in their communities.

We specialize in culturally competent community organizing and connect with our community on issues that impact their daily lives, advocate for policies that will make their lives better, and help break down barriers that keep them from actively engaging in our democracy.
Key Responsibilities:
Program & Project Execution
- In coordination with the Communications and Media Director, transform Somos milestones and data into compelling stories and craft interesting content that goes beyond a press release, including social media content, draft statements, press releases, opinion pieces, and other media materials in English and Spanish as needed.
- Develop media training and talking points for team and community spokespeople prior to media engagements and provide media training prior to interviews as needed.
- Consistently work to update program budget trackers and report to director as needed
Messaging Development & Creative Content Development
- Mobilize rapid response efforts as needed to address breaking news, disinformation, and sudden announcements including pitching Somos for interviews and drafting quotes/statements.
- Proactively pursue earned media opportunities for Somos especially when it comes to narrative intervention opportunities regarding Latino voters and elections.
- Develop compelling, media-focused content ranging from press releases and messaging documents for upcoming events, including media advisories and post event summaries to maximize media coverage: that are bilingual.
- Stay informed of trends by identifying culturally relevant trends across both mainstream and Latino audiences, and tap into story opportunities connected to real-time news/campaign events.
- Develop and maintain internal messaging documents connected to organizational work or outcomes. Create and conduct internal training around internal messaging guides.
- Use the various content calendars, planning documents and upcoming events to develop earned media plans that highlight and promote Somos activity both in state and national.
- Through the drafting process ensure all press/media materials are adhering to brand messaging and messaging guidelines.
- Provide strategic communications support to promote Somos’s programs and projects among national and beltway media.
Relationship Management
- Develop and support the implementation of earned media strategies around Somos’ programs, projects, products, narrative goals and key milestones (announcing 2024 budget, bringing new states online, etc.).
- Specifically target key national broadcast TV outlets like CNN, MSNBC, Univision, Telemundo, etc including booking Somos.
- Build strong relationships with national, regional and local mainstream/Latino media as well as influencers and journalists.
- Continually seek out and create opportunities to place stories in media both in states we have a presence in and with national media news sources.
Process & Systems Management
- Establish & maintain processes and systems to accurately record and document media coverage and analyze the effectiveness of press releases campaigns, providing insights and reports on media engagement.
- Assist in the monitoring, tracking, and analyzing of campaign performance, providing regular reports and insights to stakeholders and making data-driven recommendations for optimization.
- Assist with responding to media inquiries and coordinating interviews and canvass shadows.
- Update and maintain Somos press lists with national and state press contacts. Build and developstrong media relationships that lead to coverage of Somos.
Analysis and Reporting
- Conduct media monitoring to track news stories and Somos press hits, through the maintenance of an internal tracker.
- Assist in the monitoring, tracking, and analyzing campaign performance, providing regular reports and insights to stakeholders, and making data-driven recommendations for optimization.
- Ensure legally approved language is used in all press releases and external facing earned media communications.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and media consumption habits to identify new opportunities and optimize media campaigns accordingly.
- Conduct research on media contacts and cultivate potential new media contacts.
Interdepartmental Collaborate and Communication
- Work collaboratively with Somos existing staff and consultants on areas of focus work including: research, data collection and media relations

Qualifications:
- At least three years of experience in a communications experience or a similar role in a professional setting with proven experience working with media and a portfolio of story placements across mainstream media and Latino media platforms.
- Demonstrated commitment to the organization's mission and values.
- An understanding of the broader media landscape, what is newsworthy, and how various types ofnews outlets operate
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with internal/external teams.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with changing priorities and timelines.
- Has experience working in Google Suite (Google Sheets, Google Slides, ect) or Microsoft Suite (Excel, Power Point, ect), Zoom, & Slack
- Spanish written and spoken proficiency.
- Willingness to engage with and learn about cultural competency and equity-related issues.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments at once and prioritize to meet deadlines.
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.

Compensation: This is a full time exempt cycle position that runs through December 2025. The pay range is $65,000 - $75,000 per year and is commensurate with experience.
Benefits: Somos Votantes provides a generous paid time off policy with paid vacation, paid sick leave, personal days, paid Federal holidays, and paid organizational time off from at least Dec 23 to January 1st yearly. Somos Votantes provides staff cell phone reimbursement, and up to 80% of employee healthcare reimbursed.
