Launched in 2016, The Hub Project is a nonprofit effort comprised of a growing team of communications, research, operations, and organizing experts who have extensive experience in campaign strategy, digital, and polling and analytics. Reports to: Creative Manager
Location: Washington, D.C. (The Hub has returned to the office 3 days a week as of April 2022, and interns can expect to work from the office at least 3 days a week at that time.)
Internship dates: January 16, 2024 - April 12, 2024
Status: Full-Time; Non-Exempt
Salary: $20/hour not to exceed 40 hours/week
Position Summary
The Hub is accepting applications for a Strategic Communications Intern to support The Hub’s various campaigns and initiatives, to support the creation of communications materials, as well as learn the communications fundamentals of effective political advocacy. We’re looking for someone who gets excited about landing coverage with traditional news media and maximizing the impact of our supported campaigns by improving the ways we reach our target audiences with messages that change minds.
The right candidate will have some exposure to communications and be ready to jump in, try new tactics, and learn from their successes as well as their mistakes. The Strategic Communications Team supports the Hub campaigns by integrating the various elements of the organization to ensure our messaging is supported by data and timely to the most critical narratives driving the day. Our campaigns leverage a mix of grassroots organizing, paid media, and earned media tactics to advance the goals of the Hub and its allies. This is a paid position.
As a Strategic Communications Team Intern, you'll:
- Brainstorm innovative communications approaches to reach different audiences
- Work with the rest of the Communications Team to build and refine press lists to reach local and national audiences
- Learn how to draft press releases and get 1-on-1 coaching from experienced communicators on how to pitch reporters and land coverage
- Collaborate with campaign teams to develop smart and strategic tactics that are responsive to the strategic needs of individual campaigns
- Quickly mobilize around rapid-response moments to inject key messages into the narratives of the day
- Support additional communications needs across the organization, including reports, funding documents, and presentations
About you:
- You have an interest in communications and are ready to pick up the phone, build relationships, and land coverage
- You have basic experience with political writing including academic experience and are ready to refine your skills by doing more
- You are comfortable taking on rapid response requests and working in a fast paced environment
- You’re organized, detail-oriented, and analytical even in a fast-paced work environment
- You are ready to ask questions to grow your knowledge base
- You have a demonstrated interest in progressive causes
- You’re proactive with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
- You have some experience drafting communications materials and are ready to learn more about how to incorporate
