This role serves as the campaign’s writer, working closely with the Creative Director & Message Coordinator to craft compelling, audience-specific communications. The position is responsible for developing speeches, remarks, talking points, press materials, and rapid-response content that align with the campaign’s overall strategy and policy priorities.
The writer will shape and maintain the candidate’s authentic voice across platforms, ensuring consistency while adapting tone for diverse audiences and formats. Responsibilities include adapting talking points for events and media appearances, drafting op-eds and statements, preparing briefing materials, supporting press outreach, and producing urgent communications during breaking news cycles.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the campaign’s writer, partnering with the Creative Director and Message Coordinator to shape and refine messaging.
- Adapt existing message content for new speeches, remarks, scripts, and talking points for meetings, events, rallies, media appearances, and interviews. Develop new material when needed
- Develop op-eds, statements, and briefing memos to support the message and communications team.
- Act as the go-to writer for day-to-day campaign messages needs.
- Collaborate with senior staff to ensure alignment with broader campaign themes and policy priorities.
- Work with research team to craft accurate, persuasive arguments.
- Produce rapid-response content during breaking news or crisis situations.
- Capture and maintain the candidate’s authentic voice while adapting tone for different audiences and platforms.
Qualifications, knowledge, and skills:
- 2–4 years of experience in political communications, journalism, or high-level writing roles.
- Background in electoral politics, large-scale advocacy campaigns, or creative agencies supporting similar efforts.
- Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality written content under tight deadlines in fast-paced environments.
- Strong understanding of the social media landscape, including audience development, content creation, and emerging platforms.
- Exceptional writing skills with the ability to adapt tone and voice across formats and audiences.
- Strong political judgment and a deep understanding of California’s political landscape.
- Self-starter with excellent organizational skills and the flexibility to work extended hours, including nights and weekends.
