The Role

Upsolve is hiring a full-time Immigration Attorney with experience in asylum cases. As the lead Immigration Attorney at Upsolve, you will play a pivotal role in our efforts to assist individuals seeking asylum and related work permits in partnership with LA County. In this role, you will not only prepare asylum applications (Form I-589) for migrants in Los Angeles, but also provide invaluable expertise to help design our new online asylum tool. Your deep understanding of asylum law will guide our development process, ensuring that our tool is both legally sound and user-friendly. This role offers a unique opportunity to combine your legal expertise with technology to make a meaningful impact at scale for asylum seekers.

Responsibilities
  • Review and analyze asylum and work permit forms for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to relevant legal requirements

  • Provide expert legal insights and guidance to our team on the development and improvement of a new asylum and work permit form preparation online tool

  • Lead partnership with LA County Office of Immigrant Affairs and related immigration nonprofits

  • Collaborate closely with Upsolve’s software engineers to ensure the effectiveness of Upsolve’s new asylum online tools and resources

  • Manage Upsolve’s immigration paralegal and newer additions to the team

  • Stay updated on changes and developments in immigration law, particularly related to asylum cases

  • Assist in the creation of educational resources and content to support site visitors’ understanding of the asylum process

  • Conduct media interviews with local and national news outlets to increase awareness about Upsolve’s free immigration tools, serve as a thought leader, and advocate for reform

Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active membership in the California State Bar

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience practicing immigration law, with a focus on asylum cases

  • Strong understanding of asylum laws, regulations, and procedures

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Technologically proficient

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Empathetic and passionate about serving low-income individuals and contributing to access to justice

  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish

Compensation

A salary of $100,000 per year plus benefits (including health care reimbursements and a 401k plan), commensurate with experience
