We are looking for a detail-oriented, mechanically proficient Production Technician to join our team. VotingWorks is growing our assembly and warehouse operations to ensure every unit of our election equipment is built to specification, quality controlled, and delivered on time. This full-time position is fundamental to our mission and will have a large impact on our success.
The position will be at our Bellingham, WA location and is 100% on-site. The successful candidate will report directly to the Hardware Operations Manager.
What You’ll Do:
As a Production Technician, you’ll be a key part of our hardware team, assembling and shipping our products with care and precision. You'll also run quality control, keep inventory organized, work from and update work instructions, be available for repairs, and be ready to pivot when we need to change something. It’s a role for someone who’s ready to roll up their sleeves and grow with us.
The ideal candidate is a highly motivated individual with excellent manual dexterity who can closely follow direction, operate autonomously under that direction, identify and communicate necessary information, and someone that will deliver on their goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assembly: Accurately assemble products while following provided instructions., Sometimes using complex tools and detailed component specifications. Assembly instructions will be written in English.
- Shipping and Receiving: Ensure products and components are carefully packed, received, and shipped on time—keeping things moving smoothly.
- Quality Assurance: Perform inspections and tests on products before, during and after assembly to ensure they meet our standards for quality and reliability.
- Component Handling: Safely handle electronic components and subassemblies, following proper electrostatic discharge (ESD) protocols and ensuring parts are correctly stored, labeled, and tracked throughout the production process.
- Software Imaging: Learn to use our software tools to install operating systems on the equipment
- Workspace Maintenance: Keep work areas clean, organized, and safe, in compliance with internal protocols.
- Small Orders Fulfillment: Accurately pick and pack while following specific instructions to process small-scale customer orders in a timely manner.
- Continuous Improvement: Provide feedback on operations and workflows to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Workplace Optimization: Assess and provide feedback regarding the workspace layout to support better organization, accessibility, and productivity. This includes building, maintaining, and moving furniture and fixtures.
- Repair Work: Learn our equipment well enough to repair damage or to upgrade machines from the field
- Travel: travel will be required as much as four weeks per year for (among other reasons): on-site equipment support and maintenance as well as company offsites, election support and testing lab support.
Qualifications:
- Experience in a hands-on manufacturing or technical assembly role preferred.
- Experience using basic hand tools.
- High attention to detail with excellent manual dexterity and comfort working with small or delicate components.
- Ability to adapt quickly to new tools, processes, or tasks while remaining comfortable in a fast-paced, evolving environment with changing priorities.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to propose improvements.
- Technical aptitude and willingness to learn new skills.
- Effectively communicating both verbally and in written mediums.
Physical Demands & Requirements:
- May be required to lift or carry up to 50 pounds.
- Hand-to-eye operations requiring fine motor skills with precision accuracy.
- Comfortable using hand tools, power tools, precision instruments, and possibly light machinery.
- Must be able to work in person in our workshop in Bellingham, WA 5 days/week.
- Travel may be required 2-4 times a year
Expected Milestones:
- 1 Month: Up-to-speed on fundamentals and successfully producing first sub-assemblies
- Training & Certification: 100% completion of safety, ESD, and work-instruction training. Core understanding of the VotingWorks mission
- Assembly Readiness: Successfully assemble 1 full unit and 3 major sub-assemblies under supervision with ≥95 % first-pass yield (FPY).
- Documentation Accuracy: 0 critical errors while updating work-instruction forms.
- 3 Months: Reliable solo contributor; beginning to spot and fix small issues.
- Knowledge: Familiarity with all devices in the product suite
- Throughput: 5 units/week with ≥97 % FPY.
- QC & Testing: Detect ≥90 % of non-conformances during in-process inspection (measured by QC log).
- Shipping Accuracy: 100 % of packed units pass pre-ship checklist.
- Continuous Improvement: Submit ≥2 documented suggestions, at least one adopted or in trial.
- 6 Months: Cross-trained, efficient, and actively improving processes.
- Cross-Training: Competent on all product SKUs + repair workflows.
- Efficiency Gains: Personal assembly cycle time ≥10 % faster than 3-month baseline while maintaining ≥98 % FPY.
- Process Improvement: Implement change that saves ≥5 min/unit or reduces defects by ≥1 %.
- 12 Months: Go-to production expert; driving measurable factory-level gains.
- Output & Quality: Sustain ≥10 units/week at 99 % FPY; <0.5 % customer returns/RMA attributable to production.
- Inventory Accuracy: <1 % variance on cycle counts for personally handled parts;
- Field & Travel Support: Complete ≥2 field-service trips with post-visit reports

Compensation:
Annual Salary: $60,000 - $65,000
