Working Families is seeking a Californa Communication Coordinator and Organizer based in Southern California who will tell our story in Spanish language and API language (Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and other) media, support our membership organizing and electoral programs for endorsed candidates, and staff our regional steering committee of member affiliates and member representatives in Southern California. The Organizer will also identify, recruit, and support members and volunteer leaders to organize electorally in their region. In addition, this role will support the California Communications Manager by prepping spokespeople and pitching stories in the state’s diverse media ecosystem.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Organizing Duties
- Grow and build our membership base through in person events, text/call programs, digital organizing and attending events in region
- Lead a dynamic in person and virtual program to welcome new members into the Party through relational organizing, welcome gatherings and pipelines into membership meetings.
- Build a base of activists to support our electoral priorities in the Inland Empire or San Diego area of Southern California
- Support facilitation of our regional steering committee of member organization affiliates and member representatives in the Inland Empire or San Diego area of Southern California
- Reach party-building and organizing goals in an assigned region
- Develop knowledge and analysis of the political and community landscape in assigned regions of the state.
- Lead and recruit in person canvasses, virtual phone and text banks events for endorsed candidates in the San Diego area
- Coordinate with member affiliates and coordinate members to collaborate coordinated campaigns that build our electoral infrastructure and capacity to ultimately win elections and build the power of the multiracial working class in the San Diego area
- Manage contact lists and maintain up to date records in our database
- Pitch stories to regional Spanish language and ethnic media
- Prepare WFP spokespeople, including staff, members, and candidates, for press interviews and public events
- Provide media training to Working Families Party staff, members, and candidates
Communications Duties
Skills and Qualifications
- At least three years experience in organizing and/or communications
- Self-starter with a strong commitment to in-person organizing to build or mission and objectives
- Proven organizing ability, including effectiveness in engaging potential activists and supporters
- Experience working with a diverse group of volunteers and supporters across all demographics and backgrounds--especially race, gender and class
- Basic computer skills, including Excel, Powerpoint, Gmail, GSuite, Slack and Airtable
- Familiar with social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr)
- A passion for and commitment to social, economic, and racial justice
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both Spanish and English
- Critical thinking and problem solving skills
- Drive and tenacity to advance our mission and values
- Ability to work independently, including strong follow-through and self-direction on assignments
- Attention to detail and the ability to manage the technical aspects of a project such as logistics, paperwork, deadlines, etc.
- Ability to work effectively with strong personalities, peers, public officials, and allies
- Experience in grassroots non-profit, labor, or political organizing a plus
- Drivers License and access to a car
- Familiarity working with VAN or other voter file data
- Experience with organizing and tools used for phone banking including predictive dialers, broadcast SMS messaging, social media and email/action pages - particularly: Hubdialer, Thrutalk, Upland (Mobile Commons), Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Action Network.
- Experience and comfort using EveryAction for tracking volunteer activity.
- Strong command of Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet software.
- Experience working in labor or with grassroots organizations in Southern California
- Political intelligence and judgment

What Else Should You Know
- Compensation: The salary range for this position is $65,000- $85,000. The final salary will be determined based on an internal equitable scale that takes into consideration years of experience, geographic location, and final job description. We also offer a robust benefit package for full time employees including paid time off; health, dental, vision, and life insurance; flexible spending accounts; retirement plan options; professional development funding; and remote work support.
- Location: The position is a full-time, permanent role remotely based in the Los Angeles and San Diego counties of California. It will require travel throughout the state of California.
- Union Affiliation: WFP is a unionized workplace. This is a non managerial role eligible to join WFP's staff bargaining unit after six months of employment. WFP's union employees are represented by the New York Metropolitan Area Joint Board, Workers United union.
