The Yale Program on Climate Change Communication (YPCCC) invites applications for the position of Data Scientist, Modeling to lead the design, development, and implementation of regression, machine learning, and other statistical models as part of a small team devoted to supporting academics and practitioners in climate change research and communication.

About Our Tools

  • Primarily R, some Python for programming
  • R, Python, Stata, SPSS for statistical analyses and modeling
  • ArcGIS Pro, QGIS for spatial analysis and visualization
  • R, Python, D3.js, React, Tableau for visualization
  • GCP, AWS and High-Performance Computers for computing and storage
  • Git for versioning

Responsibilities include:

  • Consult on research project design, data management and analysis
  • Develop and implement machine learning and other statistical models to solve social science research problems
  • Build and maintain research pipelines for data acquisition, processing, analysis, deployment and visualization
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify problems and develop data-driven solutions

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in Computer Science, Political Science, Economics, or equivalent practical experience
  • 3+ years experience developing and applying statistical or machine learning models
  • Extensive computer programming experience using R
  • Some experience working with spatial data, such as census data or satellite imagery
  • Comfortable working with Git and working on a team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with internal and external teams; ability to develop trust, cooperation, and mutual respect

Desired Qualifications

  • Social science research experience or experience in academia
  • Experience designing surveys and/or analyzing survey data
  • Familiar with SQL and working with relational databases
  • Familiarity with managing cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and Docker
  • Familiar with RESTful API architecture
  • Knowledge of environmental policy, science, studies, or climate change
  • Programming experience with D3.js or other analytics and visualization tools like Tableau or PowerBI
