About Fresh is a Boston area nonprofit on a mission to strengthen communities by getting healthy food to the households that need it most. Our programs are built to be integrated into community health systems and are designed to scale with our partnerships and emerging opportunities.

About Fresh currently operates two programs

  • Fresh Truck mobile markets bring affordable, healthy food closer to low-income neighborhoods throughout Boston
  • Fresh Connect is a digital payment platform that enables health care providers to subsidize the cost of healthy food for patients and analyze the health-related impacts of improved diets.

Position Overview

The Staff Accountant is an integral member of the accounting team, who performs specialized, technically advanced accounting, budgetary work and other financially related tasks to support the Finance Director.
This position provides timely and accurate financial information to employees, finance team and Finance Director.

What you’ll do

  • Preparation of journal entries
  • Maintain inventory & reconcile quarterly reports
  • Grant and foundation financial report preparation
  • Prepare a variety of complex and recurring accounting-related reports, summaries, statistical reports and reconciliation
  • Perform financial analyses, calculations related to posting and accounting functions
  • Assist Finance Director with Annual Budget and Audit preparation
  • Solves problems and recommends changes in procedures in accordance with previous training and experience to enhance efficiencies and internal controls
  • Special projects and tasks assigned by the Finance Director
  • Perform other duties as required by the organization and Finance Director

Who you are

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in accounting or related field required from an accredited college/university
  • Two (2) years of progressive accounting experience; preferably in non-profit accounting
  • Solid Knowledge of GAAP, Accrual Accounting, Audit preparation, Fixed Asset accounting, Budget preparation and current accounting practices
  • Advanced Accounting/Budget/ technical knowledge
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, modular accounting systems (preferably with QuickBooks Online), and other applicable software applications
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds, sit for extended periods of time, climb stairs, and operate office equipment and computers with ease

  • Strong organizational, time management and prioritization skills; work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Recognition of the importance of documentation and proven ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Maintain high level of integrity, confidentiality, ethical standards - assumes personal responsibility for scope of position.
  • Enjoys building and maintaining relationships with staff.
  • Self-starter and independent but works collaboratively.
  • Values continuous learning and seeks ongoing training and development.

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement

About Fresh requires its employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19, and we strongly suggest that staff receive booster shots as they become available, where allowable under the law, unless they are approved for a reasonable accommodation based on disability, medical condition, pregnancy, or religious belief that prevents them from being vaccinated.

  • If you are currently unvaccinated, you are required to have received at least one COVID-19 shot prior to your first day of employment and to provide proof of your vaccination status within the first 30 days of your employment. For the two COVID-19 shot regimen, you will be required to provide proof of your second COVID-19 shot within the first 60 days of your employment. Failure to provide timely proof of your COVID-19 vaccination status will result in the termination of your employment with About Fresh.
  • If you are unable to be fully vaccinated due to disability, medical condition, pregnancy, or religious belief, you will be required to apply for a reasonable accommodation within the first 30 days of your employment in order to remain employed with About Fresh. As a part of this process, you will be required to provide information or documentation about the reason you cannot be vaccinated. If your request for an accommodation is not approved, then your employment may be terminated.
