Fresh Truck is a nonprofit mobile market program created by About Fresh, a Boston-based nonprofit committed to expanding access to the high-quality, fresh food that is vital to people’s health, wellbeing, and culture. By empowering individual purchasing, ensuring convenient local access to fresh food, and taking into account the different ways in which people experience food, About Fresh is transforming the food system and who pays for it. In addition to Fresh Truck, About Fresh created Fresh Connect, a prepaid debit card and analytic platform that enables healthcare providers to cover the cost of healthy food for patients.

Beginning in January 2024, Fresh Truck will operate as an independent organization under the fiscal sponsorship of About Fresh. As they move into the future, Fresh Truck will continue strengthen health and highlight joy in the neighborhoods of Boston by elevating the purchasing power of households, uplifting local food cultures and local voices, and bringing healthy, affordable foods to the neighborhoods that need them most.

Job Description

Market Managers are leaders of the Mobile Market team, the face of Fresh Truck in our communities. Market Managers ensure that our customers have a dignified, convenient and reliable shopping experience. They manage each weekly market event from load-in to sales, overseeing the work of Operations Assistants, Volunteers and Community Representatives. This role requires great customer service and leadership skills as well as a passion for community building and food justice.

  • Workweek: Monday thru Saturday, 35-40 hours per week, always paid for a 40-hour workweek; overtime available when necessary.

What you’ll do:

Daily Market Operations (90%)

  • Load fresh produce into and drive a full-size, 39ft school bus to Mobile Market sites.
  • Supervise and Perform the following duties as part of mobile market operations:
    • Fresh Produce inventory count
    • Produce load-in to market buses or trucks
    • Produce load-out to warehouse at end of day
    • Produce check-out on ipad point of sale
    • Produce bagging and re-stocking
    • Excellent “customer service +”
    • Bus/truck and warehouse cleaning
    • Market closing notes and other administrative duties
    • Oversee, count and track cash pouch during and after markets.

  • Oversee Mobile Market operations in diverse, low-income neighborhoods where access to fresh produce is needed,
  • Ensure a dignified, respectful shopping experience for our customers while providing high-quality fresh fruits and vegetables,
  • Supervise and manage market support staff, youth employees, community representatives and volunteers to ensure a positive market experience,
  • Create an inviting shopping experience through engaging “customer service +” (including trauma-informed mindset, conversations about food and food justice, appropriate training provided),
  • Work directly with community partners, community representatives and volunteers to create an integrated market experience at your assigned markets,
  • Act as an ambassador and educator for SNAP/HIP/EBT and other local, state, federal benefits available to our shoppers and their neighbors.
  • Support the Fresh Truck ECommerce program via produce box distribution and work with the Online Retail Manager to improve and grow the program

Team Projects (as assigned, 5% - 10%)

  • Advocate for improved food systems and increase purchasing power through community organizing and community engagement,
  • Work on at least one working group or special project to design and implement projects that impact the community, including social action activities, operations projects and support work to improve our environmental footprint,
  • Support other Fresh Truck initiatives as assigned such as community outreach, customer surveys, and operations process improvement,

Who you are:

  • An excellent driver, accustomed to driving in an urban environment; strong preference for individuals with experience driving box trucks and large vehicles
  • Willingness to grow, adapt and learn with the organization as Fresh Truck grows, adapts and changes.
  • Grit - you’re willing to get your hands dirty, comfortable with some heavy lifting and will stop at nothing to make things happen
  • Embrace working within diverse community settings and with a strong sense of social justice; being multilingual (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Russian) is huge a plus
  • You understand and are prepared to deal with emergent issues/challenges that come along with working with vulnerable populations. Additional training will be provided.
  • Big picture team leader able to respond to the needs of the market community as well as the market operations at the same time. Cool as a cucumber under pressure.
  • You’re able to delegate tasks and activities to both staff and volunteers in a quick-moving environment.
  • 1-2 years of experience in one or a combination of the following: customer service, operations and supply chain management, food/grocery retail, and/or food service; experience with an early stage startup is a bonus.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis

Requirements

  • Driver’s license in good standing with the state of Massachusetts and points no higher than 4
  • Ability to lift ~50lb on a regular basis
  • Work collaboratively across the Fresh Truck team
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn
